'Matrix' director Larry Wachowski resurfaces, reignites sex change rumors
Source: NJ Star-Ledger

Larry Wachowski, the reclusive director who co-helmed "The Matrix" movies and the widely-panned "Speed Racer," is once again the subject of speculation that he's had a sex change operation and now goes by the name of Lana. A photograph obtained by Usmagazine.com shows a person in a blond bob, low-cut vest, red plaid pants and a cropped, cream-colored, decidedly woman-tailored jacket at Los Angeles International Airport April 17.

The website doesn't call it for either camp, but it does point out that Wachowski "has fascinated the Hollywood crowd for years." The San Francisco Chronicle reported in 2006 that Wachowski had gone through with a sex change operation, while Fox News's former gossip columnist Roger Friedman wrote a year later that Wachowski was still a man, and quoted Joel Silver, Wachowski's frequent collaborator, as saying, "They just don't do interviews, so people make things up."

1. If Larry has decided to live as Lana
I wish her well. Otherwise, it's really not any of my business.

I have to say I thought the Matrix plot had merit but the movie itself was plodding and pretentious.

I haven't seen the others.

16. Amen!
I've gotten copies of all three shooting scripts and, while I can't blame anybody for wanting to make mo' money, the original Matrix project is transcendental and can stand alone. 'Bullet time' was such a cool innovation, but the message was profound, and multi-layered. I personally believe that had the sequels not been made, the Matrix would have been regularly mentioned in the same breath as 'Citizen Kane'. The slightly nasty aftertaste of recognizing the Almighty Dollar truly reigns supreme with the release of the tacky and boring sequels brought a classic down to the level of the Planet of the Apes franchise. I'm surprised there wasn't a Saturday cartoon feature about it, ala Star Wars. By the way, I saw the original "Planet of the Apes" at the theater when I was a kid, and wasn't that impressed again until 1977 with the theatrical release of Star Wars. The original Ape mask makeup was articulate, state of the art, and took hours to apply. At the end, they just took a mask off the shelf from Wardrobe and put it on. Still, I have my faithful copy of the Matrix (as well as Star Wars) and enjoy them both.

17. excellent points
i've also been saying for years that there should have only been one Matrix and left alone...(but then again, we can say that about a lot of once-great movies killed by sequels)...the style, plot and visuals were far ahead of its time...

25. I wouldn't say awful, but they clearly weren't in the same league.
If the original had been a little more ordinary, then I think the sequels would have fit in with it nicely. But as it was there was too much of a perfect storytelling cohesion in the original movie--it just worked, single and alone, making the sequels feel less-than and grafted on.

20. Gender is a social construct
It's important for "us" to know what gender somebody wants to be known by in order for us to use the proper pronouns (until we come up with gender neutral pronouns).

24. Um, gender-neutral pronouns are tacky.
"It" is the gender neutral pronoun, we don't need to come up with one. Notice that nobody wants to be an "it"? That's because there is a specific revulsion to being IDed with the gender-neutral pronoun. It's not surprising, if you choose to ID as a woman, you want to be identified as a woman using the gender-specific pronoun "she", not an "it". If you choose to ID as a man, you want to be a "he" not an "it".

You can substitute any word or string of letters for "it", the revulsion isn't to the word itself, it's to the premise of the gender-neutral pronoun...its' very neuterness denies the gender of the person being referred to.

9. Could this be a PR distraction?
I mean, the Warshowskis have fallen a long way since The Matrix. (There's also rumors that they plagiarized the concept of that movie from a script written by a black woman. The declining quality of the sequels add credence to that charge.)

From what I know of transgendered individuals, they don't want a lot of notice. They want to make this very severe change privately. Heck, the transvestites I've met don't make that much of a deal of their lifestyle.

To me, this sounds like a PR ploy to keep these tarnished talents in the limelight for a while longer.

23. There isn't much in recent sci-fi that hasn't borrowed heavily from other sources
There was another lawsuit that I think they actually lost but it wasn't Morrison's.

11. They should leave him the fuck alone
If he wants to be "Lana" (or if he doesn't), it's no one's business but his. Speculating on blogs and tittering about his hair color or manner of dress just isn't respecting the guy. It's rude frankly. I say more power to him, whatever he chooses to do or be.

Note: The above is not really directed at the OP or this thread, more at the paparazzi style Hollywood watcher blogs that gush endlessly over crap like this.
