8. Loved it myself, but I learned a long time ago not to judge these by the books
Edited on Sat Jul-18-09 10:49 PM by pepperbear
on which they're based. There are so many editorial, economic, and executive decisions involved in making and selling a movie, especially a franchise movie, that it's almost impossible to be be completely faithful to a book. In a book, you can spend many pages on exposition, subplots, and character development. One thing's for sure; they've come a long way from the almost Disney atmosphere of the first two. In my opinion, Cuaron turned the franchise on it's ear with HP3 (my personal favorite), Mike Newell ran with the baton on 4, and they changed alot of the story in HP5 and told a fair amount of it through montage.

This latest one isn't even trying to be family fare anymore. It's gritty. The kids are portrayed as pure hormonal adolescents, playing "sexual politics junior" with each other and breaking hearts along the way. The effects are great. I can only imagine what the first draft of the script was like.

17. I want to badly now because of the movies
Sadly I know I probably won't because there's freaking nine of them. I had to give up on Stephen King when he started pumping them out faster than I could read them.

5. could've been better ...
uninspired, no sense of wonder, looks too much like "Order of the Pheonix" and the big-bang up ending was anti-climactic.

Still, it's way better than the choppy edited nightmare that was "Goblet of Fire."

7. My wife is a HP fiend and she hated Goblet of Fire the movie.
She complained about it the whole way home from the theater.

whittled down so much for a good movie. I regret that Bill Weasley wasn't in this one with Miss Delacour.

16. They should have invited Cuar'on back for a couple movies
Prisoner of Azkaban was the best so far. I've liked them all. They make me want to read the books because I know there is so much detail still missing.

18. Did They?
I agree about PoA. By far it's where plot, acting and visuals meet in a good place.

I heard they asked del Toro to direct one and he turned them down.

I think Yates is a highly capable director of tight drama. OotP has no fat in it whatsoever, as a movie. The trouble is, the Potter series has too many important stray threads.

19. I think Yates is locked for the next two.
As they're splitting "Deathly Hollows" into two movies. Gotta milk that money machine after all, but maybe we'll get a fuller story this way too.

20. That, I Know
Truthfully, I never really know if I liked a Potter movie until it makes it to HBO, and find out: is it something I will channel-flip TO, or just not away FROM, and then, after the first few returns, is it something I will or will not look to see if there's something better on.

Chamber of Secrets is probably the only one I didn't really care for at all.

For this one, Tom Felton (Draco) really turned out to be the big surprise. He and Jim Broadbent had the best performances in the flick.

9. I would have liked less teenage love shenanigans and more wizard battles
********Spoilers***********

I haven't read the books but I thought Dumbledore's death was pretty quickly dealt with. The last half hour seemed horribly rushed.

11. Loved most of it. I wish Luna Lovegood's hilarious conspiracy theories
at the Christmas party that made Harry choke on his juice and Snape roll his eyes had been in the movie.

but I'm not surprised some DUers didn't - when are DUers happy about anything in life - there is always someone unhappy with anything and everything.

I don't think differing opinions on it constitute a pattern specific to DU.

ETA I liked it to FWIW.

21. I thought HP6 stood on its own. I was telling the kids
that it would have been better if they made the last two films into three films. They had to cut out so much.

Malfoy was very good.

At first I thought Broadbent wouldn't make a good Slughorn but he pulled it off.

24. If you're deaf/hard of hearing
It's better to see it subtitled. I've seen it twice, once without subtitles and once with. I enjoyed it a whole lot more with the subtitles. A lot of the dialogue is off-camera.

At first I felt that the acting was a bit wooden, but with the subtitles (such as the death of Aragog scene) I realised why. It tied into the movie so much more and I enjoyed it immensely.

This is why I wish movies would do subtitles more often.

26. I think at this point most people are either avid followers
and know why Snape was the HBP or they just don't care. My eldest only wants to see the films and felt it still connected with the first five.
