Tomorrow When the War Began

The much-loved Aussie book has made it to the big screen, with stunning scenery, an attractive cast, and a few explosions.

There's an amusing moment during Tomorrow When the War Began when a character is reading the book My Brilliant Career. She's asked if it's any good, and she says that it's better than the movie. The other character replies that most books usually are. The film makers will be hoping that's not the case with this adaptation.

John Marsden's 1993 novel is one of the most successful and cherished Australian books of recent years. It's become a global hit and is a part of many school English classes. This tale of teenagers taking up arms was perhaps always destined to hit the big screen, but I'm sure the film makers were nervous in tackling a piece of work that has so many loyal fans.

Set in the fictional town of Wirrawee, Tomorrow When the War Began centres on 17 year old Ellie (played by Caitlin Stasey). Sensing that life is about to change, she decides to gather her friends together for a last-fling camping trip. It's a chance to escape from the grown-up world and for these seven diverse kids to just hang out.

Cut off from the rest of civilisation, they notice the fighter jets in the sky overhead, and aren't too worried. But when they return home they find their families gone, houses deserted and a world turned upside down. Australia has been invaded and the population has been herded into Wirrawee's showground and is living in fear.
