Netflix is tanking, methinks. Suggestions needed for alternative dvd sources.
Anyone here happy with the latest move by Netflix to remove ALL identification from movie reviews on the site?
No more member's names, logos, avatars, absolutely no way to tell who wrote what review.
And no way to find any reviews YOU wrote.

......Found this out today, went to the Netflix blog..the comments are thunderously negative about it
http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=2765056849626104020&postID=5881544596747905692&page=4&token=1308844091537

THEN
I read the Seeking Alpha article about Netflix CFO abruptly quitting, insiders selling off stock, etc.
Netflix: Setting Up for Disaster
# CFO Resigns Unexpectedly. Such a vital company figure resigning suddenly, amidst extreme upward momentum tells me something may be brewing behind the scenes or under the surface.
# Heavy Insider Selling. Large selling made by CEO Reed Hastings and others is a huge warning signal. If the leaders and executives of the company are pulling their money out of the company, why should the average investor (who has much less clarity into the company's operations) leave his money in? Heavy insider selling is many times a warning of an impending downturn or potential "shady" behavior.

This long time Netflix dvd renter is thinking of making a change.
I cannot stream, have a piss poor DSL service., plus Linux, Netflix only uses Silverlight.

Any suggestions?

1. I'm quitting Netflix
I put my membership on hold for two months and came back to the same crap movies with the exception of maybe 3 good new ones. I don't find the ten-ish bucks per month to be worth it anymore.

18. I don't have trouble finding good movies, but am tired of the "screw the customer" mentality
that seems to be growing at the company.

They are going to phase out dvd rentals, just be all streaming.
You can't search for movies by ratings.
They took out the "friends" feature, they removed all traces of community, they now have this sliding image search format for movies, you can't look by topic or country or anything anymore.

Most of my movies I have found by running across them on the web and then checking to see if Netflix has them to rent.

Being out in the boonies makes alternatives difficult to find, internet and mail are our only sources of getting entertainment.
There is of course the Tor option....

Rant over.

2. They have those $1 kiosks all over the place now
Personally I still have blockbuster all access but I added Netflix to see the streaming capabilities on my iPad and I love it.

3. I don't think so at all
Financial statement from year-end 2010 (when CFO McCarthy left) showed very strong increase in profits.

http://investing.businessweek.com/research/stocks/financials/financials.asp?ticker=NFLX:US

As for McCarthy's leavetaking, situation normal: he was so successful he was moving on up:

"He always had aspirations beyond Netflix," said company spokesman Steve Swasey, declining to elaborate.
The company's stock fell 3.6 percent in after-hours trading to $182.99 a share following the company's announcement. The stock closed down $3.66 a share, or 1.89 percent, at $189.81 a share on Nasdaq.
"He's a super capable CFO, although he was sometimes gruff and was not very tolerant of people who didn't do their homework," said Michael Pachter, an analyst with Wedbush Morgan, who has a sell rating on the company on views Netflix is overvalued.
Analysts noted that a change in a CFO often sends jitters through Wall Street, particularly in the case of success story like Netflix. The company has seen meteoric growth with its mail-order DVD rental service and quickly expanding streaming service at a time of weak DVD sales and mounting concerns about cord cutting, which is when consumers replace cable subscriptions with Web video.
Analysts also said they expected McCarthy was likely being courted by other companies following his successful run as CFO at Netflix.

9. Netflix ain't going anywhere.
They may change their model a bit. But streaming is here to stay, and they're at the forefront. They also have a decent DVD library. They're not hurting.

4. The DVD rental portion of the business may be dying, but the streaming side ...
is booming. It's a great service and the studios are finally understanding they have to come to terms with it.

12. That's weird, because only a small percentage of their movies are available for streaming.
And their streaming queue sucks, once something is on there you can't remove it, even once you watch it.

Edited on Thu Jun-23-11 12:37 PM by kestrel91316
the ones you can also watch live. I'm referring to that new streaming queue that just shows the movie posters and you can scroll them left or right.

How do you remove those???

I thought you were talking about your 'Instant Queue,' the list of all the streaming movies/shows you plan to watch.

I would rather watch them on my tv. (no Wii or other streaming device) another stupid company aiming at the under 20 crowd and ignoring all the others. What is it about american companies that start out nice and then shoot themselves in the foot?????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Supply Side Jesus mentioned NOTHING about streaming in his post. Nothing. Re-read it, carefully, and you will see that. He's giving some suggestions on how to find great movies from Netflix. And they STILL OFFER DVD's.

14. ah....I see now where we are mis-communicating about this.
the link SSJ offered says this:

Instantwatcher helps you find good streaming titles from Netflix

“A must for Netflix subscribers everywhere that streaming is offered” — The New York Times

which i took to mean that the link is about "instant" ( streaming) movies.
and indeed it appears to be.

Whilst my issue is that I cannot stream, for a variety of reasons, and was seeking alternatives to Netflix which is focusing more and more on streaming.

And my other issue I am doing too much multi-tasking this am with a deadline, which does not help my communication at all.

:dunce:

17. Yes, and I apologize, too. I assumed Instantwatcher also let you
sort through the DVD titles at Netflix. I believe I've heard of services that help you find the hard-to-find DVD's easier. I thought that was one of them.

22. I'm happy with Netflix.
They have a great selection of classics and foreign classics. E.g. Seventh Seal, Bicycle Thief, Seven Samurai, Tokyo Story, Picnic at Hanging Rock, etc.

I like the stream lining too and the t.v. selection.

25. Netflix can bite my ass
The streaming service is garbage...a tiny percentage of the films available on DVD.

Then there's stuff that's not available on DVD or streaming.

SO...as I said in my subject line..."Netflix can bite my ass."

26. Netflix does have a lot of pure steaming crap available, BUT...
now that DVD rental shops are dying (and Redbox seems to have only current films), it is the best source by far for classic and foreign films.

Anybody who can't find anything to rent or stream is probably focusing only on current or recent multiplex movies and totally ignoring the marvelous, inventive, and entertaining foreign and classic films that are available.

My instant and mail order queues each have about 200 films and TV episodes in them.

29. Won't exist in a few short years
at least not in it's current form.

TVs and computers are merging and all rentals will eventually be in some form of what is now called On Demand.

DVDs will be going the way of CDs and - athough it pains me to say it - books.
