Excerpt from an interview with the Phelps family from 10/31/06
You can watch it here:
http://www.break.com/index/crazy_phelps_family_on_tyra.html

I absolutely despise Fred Phelps and his family and everything they stand for. They are pretty much the bottom of the barrel in terms of Christianity.
I would warn you that the interview is very offensive, but it's good to see these crazed harpies make such fools of themselves.
I think more needs to be done to counter the garbage that these people spew. It is evil, and it is damaging to Christianity. Very damaging. Every Christian should be enraged by this perversion!

Here she is on Hannity. This is the only time in my life I ever cheered Hannity on.
What a fucking viper. Someday she'll choke to death on her own venom.

4. I'm proud to say that I made them back off twice from me
First time was in a politics chatroom that I used to frequent. The grandson of Fred Phelps had been in there for about 45 minutes before I joined and was doing nothing but talking about homosexuals of course. I joined, and I got several private messages asking me to do something (my reputation preceded me). I asked him if lesbians were as bad as male homosexuals. They were. I asked if AIDS was God's punishment for those that were abominations before His eyes. It was. I pointed out to him that lesbians have one of the lowest AIDS infection rates of any societal group out there, and by his own "logic" God must really like, in fact, love lesbians. I paused then wrote, "That pretty much proves to me that God is a man. Every guy I know just loves lesbians." He yelled several profanities at me, damned me to hell, and left the chat room never to return. I was hero of the chat room for the next 30 minutes. :)

Second time was in person. They came to Tulsa in the late 1990s to protest the first pride parade and picnic Tulsa had had in a long time. They were given a corner of the park where it was to be held so I got across the street from them with two signs, "God Is Love," and "Fred Phelps Is a Wanker." When they saw the second sign, two of the guys (both smaller than I) put down their signs and went to the curb and waited for traffic to ease so they could cross the street to "talk" to me. During that time, I had pulled out my juggling torches (I was going to juggle fire to attract attention away from them - they hate that), and I lit them just as traffic cleared up. The guys hesitated, and I looked at them and smiled a grin that I think conveyed to them the message, "I'm a lot bigger than both of you, and I have fire. You should probably go pick up your signs again," because that's what they decided to do, and I started juggling for the passersby.

9. "I'm a lot bigger than both of you, and I have fire."
 Nice.

I encountered them in their hometown of Topeka, KS. Was sent there to work on some systems for BNSF Railroads. This was back in 1997 though, so they weren't quite as well-known. In fact, I had no idea who or what they were. I just remember doing a double... no, make that TRIPLE take on those signs they had. God hates WHAT??? Am I actually reading that on a protest sign? At that particular protest they were upset at Disney for something, so they also had signs like "Mickey Mouse = F*g Lover" and other ridiculous crap. I mean, I really thought it was a joke protest. I was completely speechless.

12. I first encountered them real life at the University of Kansas
Edited on Fri Dec-08-06 10:54 AM by TlalocW
When I went to my brother's law school graduation ceremony. I had already run into the grandson in the chatroom by that time and knew quite a bit about them, and when I pulled in with my mom, I was quite giddy that they were there because my mind was racing about what I could do to piss them off. Alas, the walk from the car to inside the building was too short for me to come up with anything.

They had quite original signs like, "Kansas Gayhawks." Apparently, because Phelps was disbarred as a lawyer, and he got his degree at KU, somehow KU Law is now full of homosexuals. Fundie logic.

The weird thing is - and I've said this on several posts - is that many times Fred Phelps looks like a bad drag queen who... how to say it non-offensively, has just gotten too old to keep being one and doesn't realize the look isn't good on him anymore. One time, he had on a white cowboy hat and was heavily made up - very white face with rouged cheeks and red lips and wearing a pink cowboy shirt - the kind that has thick thread that outlines the pockets (which have flaps with clasps that connect to their counterparts on the actual pocket) and then fancy embroidery work above the pockets. Seriously, all he needed was a wig and maybe a neckerchief, and you would have had Nathan Lane's character from the Birdcage (but aged 50 years) during Old West night at the club he and Robin Williams owned.

10. It’s really no surprise the Phelps cult’s “God” is so angry and hateful,
Edited on Fri Dec-08-06 09:55 AM by moobu2
Since everyone’s “God” manifests the believers own feelings and personality and these people are so filled with a hateful rage etc.

It always wants the same things the believer wants, doesnt it?

11. I just posted this quote
in another thread in R/T. It's appropos here, too.

"You can safely assume that you've created God in your own image, when it turns out that God hates all the same people you do." Anne Lamott

(It's one of my favorite quotes!)
