Some in Brazil object to carnival, but party drowns out their complaints
The Associated Press
Published: February 19, 2007

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil: Esdras Almeida ... planned to stand outside Monday with other members of Youth With A Mission, listening to Christian rock and reminding passers-by that carnival is the "fruit of sin" ...

Even the Catholic church, which generally tolerates the festival with its Pagan roots and nearly nude dancers, has in the past gone to court to remove parade floats that use religious imagery or deemed pornographic ...

Carnival is celebrated around the world from Europe to Haiti to New Orleans' Mardi Gras and runs to the start of Lent, the period between Ash Wednesday and Easter observed by Christians as a season of fasting and penitence. Excess and revelry are the point of carnival, which culminates on the aptly named Fat Tuesday.

Despite a handful of evangelical carnival detractors, Brazil is perhaps unique in the world as a nation of continental proportions where nearly everyone drops everything for four days to celebrate ...

1. The pagans know how to throw a parade!
This looks pretty cool (go pagans! -- and the good Christians who participate in the parade):

But with these cars carrying statues like this in a street (and being displayed on public television), the same type of party would not survive here in the US:

The fundies would go nuts! They were looking for penises on Prince's shadow at Superbowl halftime and making a huge fuss out of that. Can you imagine carnival on ABC, NBC, FOX, or CBS?

Here is a priest (fake one probably) enjoying some action at the parade:

And here is the picture of a woman covering more than the others. The rest are taking advantage of the occasion to show off their new fake boobs (I will not add them here because I don't want my post deleted :-) ):

Pagans know how to throw a parade and get it on Brazilian network television without much of a fuss.
