Terry McAuliffe unwelcome at alma mater due to abortion views.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse has canceled a book talk by Terry McAuliffe because he publicly supports abortion rights.

McAuliffe, chairman of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential campaign and author of a New York Times best-selling memoir, was to speak on Saturday to about 100 alumni of Bishop Ludden High School, his Catholic alma mater in Syracuse, about "What a Party! My Life Among Democrats: Presidents, Candidates, Donors, Activists, Alligators and Other Wild Animals.''

But his public support of abortion rights violates diocesan policy, said Danielle Cummings, assistant chancellor and diocesan spokeswoman. She cited McAuliffe's statement, "I am pro-choice, no question about it,'' on the Jan. 29 broadcast of the Hugh Hewitt national radio show.

"Any person who publicly supports abortion, or who holds that abortion is a right or a matter of choice, may not be invited to speak at diocesan functions or in its diocesan/parish facilities (except at an academic symposium where both sides of the issue can be fairly presented),'' states the policy announced in November 2003.

I'm no great fan of Terry McAuliffe and I don't have any kind of Catholic background myself, but this story has me absolutely furious at the Catholic church. I guess this story is really hitting home for me, since my employer is located right next to that school, and I drive past it frequently. Do any of the Catholics here feel like the church is trying to carry out some sort of political purge? How does one manage to retain an affiliation with that church while considering oneself to be a liberal and a Democrat?

I generally try to maintain a respectful attitude towards religion, but I'm starting to understand where some of the less tolerant are coming from. I mean, this is not some fringe, fundy nutcase institution, but a highly respected mainstream religious institution.

I'm wondering if these people are this fastidious when it comes to sending out fundraising requests. I hope that next time Mr McAuliffe gets one, he sends them a politely worded not saying that they wouldn't want his pro-choice money anyway.

I found a fundraising page for them, in case anyone wants to give them some feedback. http://www.bishopludden.org/a-gifts.html

1. I am (or was) Catholic
brought up in the teachings of the Church through school. The Church has come far from the Church i grew up in it seems. Everything is so political, Catholics used to be liberals, fighting for civil rights and justice for workers and the poor. Would this same diocese ban * or his gang from speaking because of their muderous wars in Iraq and on the people of this country and the world? They are now trying to out fundie the fundies to do this.

2. I wonder if they'd do the same to a pro-choice catholic republican.
Considering the current state of catholic politics (and since when did the church forget that so many republican voters things catholics aren't even christian?)

The Archdiocese of Sacramento, who baptized me and did my first communion and all that good stuff, so I tend to follow what's up with them even though I'm the most lapsed catholic ever, made an enormous spectacle of threatening to deny communion to democratic governor Gray Davis when he was governor here, for the horrible crime of disagreeing with the church on abortion. But there's nary a peep about our current governor, who is also pro-choice and catholic, but a republican.

6. That's an interesting bit of hypocrisy that I wasn't aware of.
Wonder what their take will be on Rudy Giuliani if he gets the nomination. I bet there won't be calls for denying him communion like there were for Kerry. What about a politician who's pro-death penalty? They certainly seem to have more problems with politicians who support reproductive freedom than they do with clergy who molest little boys.:argh:

3. Gasp! He doesn't want to impose biblical law on the nation?
Well if you want my take on it, he got off easy by just getting snubbed. :sarcasm:

4. I think the Church has taken both anti-war and anti-death penalty
stances. Wonder if pro-war & pro-death penalty politicians are barred from speaking.

7. I'm tired of the Catholic church, it's pedophiles, and hypocrisy
Many of the dioceses are going broke because of lawsuits. Have they excommunicated Pro-choice Catholics?

9. It's so very interesting
When they refuse to deal with somebody because of that person's stance/behavior it's "standing up for our beliefs".

If somebody refuses to deal with them because of their stance/behavior that person is engaging in "persecution".
