Pope Ratso names Kazimierz Nycz new bishop of Warsaw
Warsaw- Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Bishop Kazimierz
Nycz as the new Metropolitan Bishop of Warsaw, the Papal Nuncio to
Poland Archbishop Jozef Kowalczyk confirmed Saturday in the Polish
capital.

The move brought to an end speculation which erupted in January
when Archbishop Stanislaw Wielgus dramatically backed out of assuming
the post over allegations he had co-operated with communist-era
secret police.

Hailing from the Baltic Sea-side diocese of Koszalin-Kolobrzeg
Nycz, 57, was recently identified in "Priests and the Security
Police" as being a clergyman of outstanding moral fortitude who did
not succumb to pressure to co-operate with communist intelligence
services.

A Saturday report in Poland's broadsheet Rzeczpospolita daily cast
a new shadow on Archbishop Stainslaw Wielgus, accusing him of
allegedly covering-up scandals involving priests who sexually abused
young parishioners and seminarians and were also involved in
corruption.
