The name is dumb. Chocolate Jesus is more to the point. But what is insulting to Christians about a nude Christ made of Chocolate? I really don't understand that. I think it's kind of beautiful, myself.

1. The freak-out quotient always runs high when Jesus is depicted in
purposely non-traditional mediums.

I remember too well the dust-up over Serrano's PISS CHRIST some years back. Jesse Helms was at the forefront of that controversy, whipping the indignant crowd into a frenzy over public funding for decadent art, etc.

This sculpture looks downright reverent to me. There's a eucharistic vibe to Jesus the Sacrificial Lamb anyway, which isn't even a Christian idea, so chocolate is just one more medium to me.

3. I think it's the penis.
There are some people who are probably uncomfortable with the thought that Jesus was ever naked. Plus, he's not circumcised, and that's downright unChristian! LOL

5. Ding!
We have a winner. They love death destruction and mayhem against " the enemies of the Lord" but anything that hints at sexuality - oh my we can't have that now. EVERYTHING bothers these people.

6. Johnny, I love your quotation there by Paul Rudnick. I hadn't heard it
and it's really strong.

A keeper.

25. Over forty years ago, the church I attended passed out copies of an article ...
... about a metal sculpture of a naked crucified Christ, and the article explicitly discussed the penis -- what people had said about the depiction and how the sculptor responded to the reactions. I read it, thought about it, and concluded there were more interesting things to think about ...

11. You'd think people who believe Jesus was a real man
would have no problem with a depiction of his real manhood.

17. Is he circumcised in the representation?
Otherwise, they're saying he wasn't a Jew or wasn't a faithful Jew.

16. Because it's about religion, which is inherently illogical.
Butter lambs for Easter are ok, candy makers have offered chocolate crucifixes for years, and every Sunday Catholics experience the "miracle" of transubstantiation then eat their god. Any impartial observer would say Cavallaro's sculpture is the same.

24. Why is Bill Donohue pissed off about this??
WILLIAM DONAHUE, PRESIDENT, CATHOLIC LEAGUE: Well, of course, asking the public to come in and eat Jesus, with his genitals exposed, during Holy Week I think would be self-explanatory.

Um, Bill? Doesn't every Catholic church in the world ask people to come in and eat jesus?

26. The Lord's Penis and the Crucifixion
When you die by crucifixion, you die of asphyxiation. It's my understanding that during asphyxiation, the male sex organ engorges and sometimes the victim will ejaculate at the moment of death. At least, that's what I read in Naked Lunch. Where's Old Bill Lee when you need him?

I LOVE Burroughs. He would have loved this chocolate jesus.

I think the satirical nature of the capital punishment bit you refer to is one of Bill's best satires. Have you heard any of his spoken word stuff?

30. I used to have a bunch of recordings with his stuff on it
Mostly on various artist recordings that had a hodge podge of experimental and industrial artists, with which he often worked with. My favorite was his collaboration with Bill Laswell's Material, which I forget the name of. Sadly, my massive LP and 7" collection died during the floods of '93.
