A question for Methodists re: Rep. Johnson's "Nuke Syria" comments.
Please see the remarks of Rep. Sam Johnson in http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x3219008

Question: What is the responsibility of the parent organization to the church and to Rep. Johnson?

Feel free to post here or in the GENERAL thread.

thanks

1. Social Principle #165
United Methodist Social Principles Regarding Disarmament:

War and Peace—We believe war is incompatible with the teachings and example of Christ. We therefore reject war as a usual instrument of national foreign policy and insist that the first moral duty of all nations is to resolve by peaceful means every dispute that arises between or among them; that human values must outweigh military claims as governments determine their priorities; that the militarization of society must be challenged and stopped; that the manufacture, sale, and deployment of armaments must be reduced and controlled; and that the production, possession, or use of nuclear weapons be condemned. Consequently, we endorse general and complete disarmament under strict and effective international control.
Social Principles #165

The UMC is certainly was left of this creep, but the UM Churches Texas are full of members who are fundamentalists that allow sprinkling and a "little" free will.

2. Texas Episcopalians tend toward the wingnut...
...end of the spectrum, too, even though the national denomination has solid progressive social positions. The Texans are in the forefront of the "no fags in our church" movement that is dividing the Episcopal Church.

I apologize in advance to Texan DUers and all Texans of goodwill, but -- between my church and my country -- I've about had my fill of ideas from that neck of the woods.

3. Yes, isn't the Diocese of Dallas one of the two or three in the country
that still will not accept women as priests?

9. Robert Duncan, Bishop of the Pittsburgh Diocese, is opposed to the
gay Bishop. He is one of the leaders of the conservative opposition.

Individual churches in our diocese refuse to acknowledge the Suffragan Bishop Jane Dixon, not that it slowed her down any. One conservative church imported a rector from Texas, part of the conservative movement, the church split, the vestry was conservative and tried to align itself with outside conservative dioceses, and lost in court to Dixon.

5. read your letter and their reply
I think that the Official Board might be a place to go to register complaints, and then maybe to the Bishop

(raised in the Methodist Church in the North, so I know a little bit about how this church works)

7. start with the national
I think its the council of bishops....there should be some website that lists the bishops, who are assigned by geographical area (at least they were some 20 odd years ago when I belonged to the UM church). I don't know if the official board of the church still meets at a specific time, but as I recall, the meetings aren't open to the public. A call to the church should tell you who is on the board, though.

I'm going to be sending some e-ail as well, but they may not listen to a New England UM who belongs to a particularly liberal local chuch.:)

This site will give you the names, e-mail addresses and mailing addresses of the district leaders, including the Bishop.
