He was surprised to learn he could not treat the Ebenezer youth group he worked with to an icy Coke on a sunny day at Rich's department store lunch counter.

Groups of men threatened Brewster on two occasions, and his own Episcopal brothers gave him the cold shoulder when he tried to organize interracial meetings of African-American and white Sunday school classes ...
