and how does he pick a new name?

Mercury elevated to pope. It was thought that a pope with a god's name was inappropriate and he changed his name- and thus a tradition was born.

that tradition was started when some dude named Mercury was made Pope. Not sure of the year but he was one of the earlier Pope John's (possibly the second). He thought that Mercury was too pagan of a name. So that's when the tradition started.

Glad you survived the airport dear. i was hoping to see you post soon. You were completely adorable, but was truly hoping you made it home okay.

on edit-I think they assume the new name based on their own whims or personally fave Saints or whatever. On third thought. . .I think they have to be Saints by now.
