Church recognizes apparitions of Virgin Mary
Panel says Virgin Mary appeared to a French shepherd girl in the mid-1600s

updated 1 hour, 59 minutes ago
PARIS - A Roman Catholic bishop said Sunday that the church has officially recognized that the Virgin Mary appeared to a teenage shepherd girl in the French Alps starting in the mid-1600s.

The announcement marks the first time the church has recognized apparitions of the Virgin Mary in France since those in southwestern Lourdes 150 years ago, the diocese of Gap and Embrun said.

Speaking at Mass in Laus in remarks broadcast nationally on France-2 television, Monsignor Jean-Michel di Falco Leandri said he recognized the "supernatural origin" of the apparitions to 17-year-old shepherd girl Benoite Rencurel starting in 1664 and running through 1718.

<snip>

The sanctuary, which was founded by Rencurel, today welcomes some 120,000 pilgrims a year — at times providing healing oils based on a method that the Virgin Mary was said to pass on to the shepherd girl, the officials said.

Wonder how many of those priests use that “healing oil” in stead of seeing a doctor whenever they have some medical crisis?

1. I like all the mystery and sacredness surrounding..
.. visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

They are wondrous and beautiful stories.

I just wonder why the world is so fucked,
really screwed up, and why humanity hasn't
evolved much in the last 300 years.

2. "...why humanity hasn't evolved much in the last 300 years."
Because humanity is still plagued by 2000+ year old religions.

4. This is the Religion and Theology forum, though.
Seems to me that this is an appropriate OP for the forum. :hi:

10. What is OP?
The article is of interest to Catholic members not all Democratic party members. Religious dogma and sainthood, etc. is not a political issue.

11. OP = Original Post
And there is room to discuss various issues that are not, at least on the face, political issues (such as discussing religious issues in the religion / theology forum).

5. Smells like desperation to me

First, the recent news of the catholic church losing their number one spot to Islam as the single religious denomination in the world.

Then, recent reports of a census where more Americans in the US are switching to other religious denominations from Catholicism due in part to the pedophilia scandal. In the same study Hispanics are seen the most loses and are massively going to Pentecostal churches.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, the new pope decides to visit the US and apologize to the victims after THREE long years of starting his papacy.

And now the vatican is finally accepting an event that happened in the 1600's (the vatican has been extremely reluctant to accept this sort of event in the past). Something is telling me the Vatican is getting desperate and are now selling miracles in a bottle to attract disgruntled catholics.

13. Not quite right...
Christianity stills holds the number one spot by a very large margin.

The abuse scandal was only a small part, secularism and rampant materialism are the main reasons Catholics leave the Church.

The Pope's visit was not sudden, it took months to plan.

The approval was in the works for a long time...it did not just happen overnight.

It amazes how little people actually know about the Catholic Christian faith. Incredible really.

The girl based the comparison of her vision with which image of Mary?
