It is not necessary to disrupt discussion in R/T
Let's use an hypothetical example.

Suppose Poster A says "I'd like to discuss the Biblical instruction to love thy neighbor as thyself".
Then Poster B says "I love myself every night, should I love my neighbor in the same way?" :)
So Poster X screams "You're disrupting this conversation, you're ridiculous, and you don't belong here."

Now, it seems clear to me that Poster X is incapable of using the "ignore poster" feature provided by those who actually own this forum.

It also seems evident that Poster X is lacking the capacity to overlook the offending post. (I call that the "manual ignore feature")

Another thing that seem apparent is that Poster X feels some need to police the forum and force it to conform to his wishes rather than the wishes of the owners of this forum.

And apparently Poster X feels that the problem could be resolved with insults.

When this pattern is repeated frequently, it indicates a compulsion on the part of Poster X to compel the forum to adjust to his own standards rather than the standards established by the owners.

The fact that Poster X is incapable of overlooking or ignoring Poster B, the fact that Poster X blames Poster B for not conforming to his expectations, the fact that Poster X uses insult as his tool to achieve his goals, and the fact that Poster X insists on creating new rules for the forum to suit his own ends, indicates to me that any problem lies with Poster X, not Poster B.

In fact, there will be no disruption unless Poster X persist in his complaint, his intolerance, and his insults, and his need to dominate the forum. (That would never happen...would it?)

As for me, I'm going to move next door to Poster B and see if I can get a little. :)

1. The wise Poster A
either laughs along with Poster B or ignores the situation, or, better yet, politely asks Poster X to answer the question in the OP to get things back on track. And Poster B wisely ignores Poster X. The most interesting thing to happen would be Poster X's reaction. Does he/she go on with the discussion or stay bent out of shape and continue a flamefest? Either action gives an indication of Poster X's true motives, I think.

I don't mind a laugh or two in any forum, but I would say it would be discouraging to any OP if they asked a serious question and only got silly answers.

2. My point
"In fact, there will be no disruption unless Poster X persist in his complaint..."

Just as the joke was a one shot deal, the complaint should be a one shot deal--end of story.

3. I posted this on another thread
which is deservedly sinking into oblivion after a long flame war: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=263&topic_id=32828&mesg_id=32976

It might be of some use here.

9. Good definitions of lunacy
And a good answer. Too bad your one simple question wasn't answered--I didn't wade through the thread to find out for sure.

4. Yep.
What I find interesting is that there are two very nice thoughtful threads posted here by R_A that actually require comtemplation and not reaction that have gotten some attention but not alot. That speaks to me about the fact that there is a certain faction of people here who are not interested in thoughtful insightful discussion but in merely pushing "agendas".

5. At what point does Poster X become a troll?
Supposing that Poster X repeatedly engages in name-calling, even after several of these posts are deleted; supposing that Poster X engages in a number of outrageous, transparent (not to mention hilariously funny) self-contradictions; supposing that Poster X follows other posters from forum to forum disrupting any thread the victim takes part in; supposing that Poster X repeatedly claims to have won an argument after being eviscerated multiple times; supposing that Poster X posts an image over and over again, to the point of spamming - at what point does it become clear that Posters X is a troll? How far can Poster X go before he gets tombstoned?

6. That's for the Moderators to decide
I have many faults, but I try very hard not to be the "post police".

I believe that the Mods are very good at their jobs and that they are always right. (by definition)

7. We are always right, cosmik.
Except when we're not, and then the admin sends us to bed with no milk or cookies.

10. That's above my pay grade.
But I have a pet peeve about people who complain about the Mods.

Without the Mods, all this bickering and whining would be impossible. :)

11. Religion and Philosophy?
Why does DU have only a religion/theology forum, but no philosophy form? And why not include philosophy in this forum? It would indicate that only believers are supposed to use this forum

12. Welcome to DU!
I seem to vaguely recall asking about that, but I don't think that there would be enough participation.

13. There used to be a Philosophy group(for donors only),
but didn't get enough participation to stay alive.

Welcome to DU!

14. Thanks.
But if this is the only place to discuss issues of mind and spirit, seems to have built in animosity that is not worth being involved with.

15. It's not the only place at all.
There are several DU Groups that you may like, and if your post doesn't cleanly fit into the Religion or Theology category for posting in this Forum, you could always post it in General Discussion.

Besides, I don't think any real animosity exists between groups, it's only evident from a fraction of the individuals here. Like most any other message board, really.

You don't know what you can do until you try. :)
