SoCal pastor arrested on embezzlement charges (suspicion of embezzling $800,000 )
A Southern California pastor has been arrested on suspicion of embezzling $800,000 from his church.
Los Angeles County sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore says the arrest Wednesday of the Rev. E. Joshua Sims capped a months-long investigation into the pastor's activity at Double Rock Baptist Church in Compton.

Prosecutors believe Sims funneled church money into a personal account between March 2000 and September 2008.

A district attorney's office spokeswoman says when church members began questioning Sims about his finances, he allegedly threatened them during his sermons.

Arraignment is scheduled for Thursday in Compton. Prosecutors say they will request bail be set at $1.2 million.

1. Ah, Compton.
They seem to have difficulties with ethics...

I'll be damned, that's a real place! What a shame though.

from Just Like You (OKeh/Epic/Sony 484117 6)

Daddy came around every once in awhile
But momma, she was there all the time
And summertime in Compton
Was not like TV
But we were right there
Where we needed to be
And the Thurmond boys
On peach street
With only their dad
So proud of themselves
And that old Pontiac they had
And miss brooks her bible
And her three little boys
At the Double Rock
Baptist Church

Makin' a joyful noise

Chorus:
Well there's more than
One way home
Ain't no right way
Ain't no wrong
And whatever road you
Might be on
You find your own way
'Cause there's more than
One way home

Got me a job at the grocery store
Workin' weekdays after
School from 5 to 9
Tommy, John and Charlie were
The neighborhood stars

With their midsize homes,
And their big fancy cars
And when the eagle flied on Friday
I'd go out and play
Wastin' time with Otis
Out on the dock of the bay
And my ticket to adventure
Was a ride on the bus
Different places,
Different faces
But they were just like us

Chorus 2x

3. This always boggles my mind. Why is a pastor handling church money?
I won't even take a check back to the office when someone asks me to on a home or hospital visit. Pastors shouldn't handle a red penny of church money.

4. some churches give the pastors complete control
i think that's a ridiculous idea by the way and too much of a temptation for the most saintly of pastors.

5. Also opens the door for accusations, even if you haven't done anything wrong.

If money goes missing, and people know the pastor has access to church funds...well, that's trouble I don't need!

I don't need complete control, though, either. More trouble I don't need.
