Even when I was 18, and considered myself a hippie who was born 20 years too late, Deadheads just made me think "WTF?". I know, I know...there are plenty of good people in that community, but too many of the ones that I actually met, saw on TV, read about in books, magazines, etc., just seemed so damn pathetic. Too many of them had a frat boy's sense of entitlement...the feeling that they could break through or climb over any fence, piss in anybody's front yard, basically do whatever they wanted wherever they wanted and if anybody told them "no" they were Establishment fascists. I saw the band play several times in high school and college but it got to the point that none of the local venues would allow them to play because of the trail of filth and destruction wrought by Deadheads. (That whole pissing in front yards thing I think was in Philly.) I remember Jerry himself pleading with fans to cut the roaming magic pixie elf crap because it was getting increasingly difficult for the Dead to find communities that would allow them to play. And I have rarely seen anything so pathetic as the zombies circling the old Spectrum in Philadelphia, eyes glazed, muttering "I need a miracle...I need a miracle....".

Edited on Sat Aug-22-09 01:24 AM by devilgrrl
I saw them twice in Philly. Once at the Spectrum and the old JFK Stadium, which was condemned afterward.

Check it out from wikipedia: It was not known at the time but the last event at the stadium was the Grateful Dead's concert on July 7, 1989. Bruce Hornsby & The Range opened. Fans at the show recall concrete crumbling from the stadium and bathrooms in poor shape. The Dead closed the show with Knockin' on Heaven's Door; it would be the last song played at the stadium.<12>

They were all great times. I think it was the fact that I actually did find something beautiful in what the band stood for that somehow piqued my dislike of deadheads. I don't know...go figure....

Actually, no.

Since the possibility of a god of any kind is so small as to not be worth bothering with, I'd say pretending he exists but his followers are the problem is pretty dumb. His followers are the only problem. I personally am not "alright" with god because there's nothing to be alright with in the 1st place.

I'd prefer a statement that doesn't try to make those who believe in ancient superstitions have a point. They don't.

As a joke, it's pretty sophomoric.

Go ahead...flame away. But I don't see why I should pretend I'm amused.

What animosity? There's no hate in my statement. I just don't think the tired old saying is funny. And religions do not exist without the people who believe in them, so the only problem are the believers. I don't hate anybody.

It's kinda like.... If I think what you're wearing is tacky, that doesn't mean I hate you.

Your chip on your shoulder eats you, it does!

Criticism of religion is not hatred. Get a clue.

Deer Hunting with Jesus. by Joe Bageant
It's so funny as he writes about his own people in Virgina where he grew up.

I can relate to the people...Even my brother in NJ is a redneck.. He wasn't one until he mated with a redneck football and bar loving chick. He really Hates Obama and public option health care, of course he has a good job with the phone company and expects to retire from it. He may get lucky.
