His Holiness
Up until this current Pope, I'd never known the press to refer to His Holiness by anything other than the papal name, e.g., Pope John XXIII, Pope Paul VI, etc. For some reason, the current Pope is often referred to by his leagl name, Ratzinger. Any idea why?

1. It's pronouncable, unlike JPII's name? Just a guess. Or his high profile under that name before
he was pope.

2. Because it's fun to say "Ratzinger?"
I thought this was going to be a Dalai Lama thread.

4. Me too . . .
. . . HH fits the Dali Lama. Somehow it just doesn't fit this pope.

7. I'm a bit uncomfortable calling the DL "His holiness". I've always thought it was a translation ...
... thing. We don't really mean Holy in the same sense that the papists use it, ie a direct link to God. We mean respected in a nonmagical way. Don't we?

9. To me . . .
. . . it's a recognition both of his office and of the years of work he has done and where that has taken him. Holy in the Eastern tradition is a totally different meaning than the Western sense. More having to do with elevation of consciousness and fullness of heart.

3. Really?
Interesting, I did know the press was labeling him in such a manner. Calling him by his last name is usually something reserved DUers as a derogatory gesture. Do you have any links or examples?

5. Cuz it's a subtle way to call him a rat!
And the name fits.

6. Isn't there a word for a word that means what it sounds like?
Like if my surname was Tubman. Or Jimmy Durante's surname were Schnozzman.

10. Onomatopoeia
Which, ironically enough, is a word that doesn't sound much like anything...

8. He's pretty much universally disliked
by people chafing under the misguided rule of yet another arch conservative pope.

That would be my guess, anyway.

People want another John XXIII. They keep getting men to the right of Genghis Khan.

11. Because what IS his Papal Name?
Benedict.

When was the last time you met a person named Benedict? How many famous Benedicts can you think of?

Oh that's right, Arnold...

The press is playing it safe. If you'll notice, they ALWAYS refer to the office first, as in 'Pope Ratzinger', but more often then that they try their damndest to avoid using his name at all, and just call him 'The Pope.'

I COULD be way off base here, but I think the fact that referring to him as Benedict in a nation so...knee-jerkable, for lack of a better word...as ours, could very well make it seem like they were calling him a traitor.

Or maybe they just don't like him. :)
