Pope book says Church can never accept abortion

21 Jun 2005 13:21:15 GMT

By Philip Pullella

VATICAN CITY, June 21 (Reuters) - Pope Benedict, in his first book published since his election, says the Catholic Church can never accept laws allowing abortion because there is no such thing as "small murders."

"The Europe of Benedict -- In the Crisis of Cultures," is a compilation of three major addresses he gave between 1992 and 2005, when he was Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and headed the Vatican department that safeguards doctrinal orthodoxy.

The last was delivered on April 1, a day before the death of Pope John Paul and three weeks before Benedict's election.

While all the material was previously published in other forms, the importance the Pope attaches to it was underscored by the fact that the compilation was being presented later on Tuesday by Cardinal Camillo Ruini, his vicar for Rome, and Marcello Pera, speaker of the Italian Senate.

2. They don't shrink from mudering women
which is what forced childbirth does to many women around the globe.

Childbirth is risky, folks. It must be voluntary.

4. OK, then they will certainly be very supportive
of easy access to all forms of contraception, since that would greatly reduce a society's need for abortion.

Riiiight.

5. Why must they live in the past....
The BushCo Theocracy is trying to drag us back to the 50's (the 1850's) and the Church has been there all along.

7. I wonder if he will call the deaths of all of the people
who will die from aids because of the vatican's policy of lying about condoms "little murders"?
I call them big ones.

9. That's what
I've read as well.
Funny how many people think that these are sacred traditions that are as old as the church, isn't it?
And that's pretty much the lame excuse they give when asked why the church cannot change its misogynistic ways.

I mean, we couldn't have all those pregnant nuns running around with the Priests' kids. They had some sort of birth control deep in the bowels of the nunneries, right? ;)
