How many quotes of Jesus's are there in the Bible?

I'm curious. Anyone have a total handy?


PS: Isn't it odd that this number isn't immediately known, despite there being 2,000 years of nitpicking Christian scholars around to have that fact handy? These are the same scholars who can tell you how many words and verses are in each testament. No one ever thought to count the words of Jesus?

How many times does the Bible say Jesus said something and quote him.

If you take the entirety of the bible I would have to guess it's probably quite a bit less than a third of the bible.

The New Testament has 7,959 verses, of which but 1,599 are sayings of Jesus Christ.

I don't know what I believe but, most of quotes attributed to him are just good advice. His philosophy is easy to understand with out all the hell fire and brimstone.

If you are or were Catholic do you remember the Epistle (sp)? I think that's what is was called. I called it the Reader's Digest condensed version of the Bible because the church took out what they didn't want one to question. Just what I thought - I was a kid.

but, I try to live my life by the Golden Rule and most of the 10 commandments. The sabbath is a tough one for me because I don't go to church and a few others. Stealing, murder, coveting, false witness, adultry - I can live with them.

apparently during a copying process in one of the monasteries. The story of the prostitute and the 'ye who is without sin cast the first stone' quote was not there previously and then it was. My recollection is that this happened somewhere around 1000 AD (or CE if you prefer).
Makes one wonder .....

The currently-known-earliest-remaining-copies of the gospel do not contain it but some early copies contain the transitional text that leads to the pericope, suggesting it was removed from those copies

There are lots of quotes attributed to Jesus, but as all of them were written at least a generation after his supposed lifetime, it's possible that he never said any of them (especially since it isn't proven that he even existed).

if you don't have something called "Faith" and use logic how can one believe?

I've asked Ministers, Priests and those who proclaim loud and clear they are 'Christians' and no on can answer my questions without it sounding like a runaround? Makes no sense to me. :shrug:

They started writing 50 to 100 years after he died.

And there is no independent corroboration that Jesus actually lived, outside the Bible. No historical accounts. The story of Mary and Joseph traveling for the Roman census is completely made up.

Furthermore, he is exactly identical in his characteristics to Mithra, Apollo, Osiris, and many other ancient gods: Born of a virgin on December 25th, son of God, did miracles, etc. etc.

We have no way of knowing the latter, but it may well be quite small; the number of the former almost certainly is accurately known, but not to me.
