Hepatitis A warning issued after Christmas communion on Long Island
http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/01/03/new.york.hepatitis.a/index.html
New York (CNN) -- Hundreds of people might have been exposed to hepatitis A while receiving communion on Christmas Day, Long Island officials said Monday.

The Nassau County Department of Health is offering vaccines to those who attended two services at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Massapequa Park in Long Island, New York, according to Nassau County Department of Health spokeswoman Mary Ellen Laurain.

Individuals might be at risk if they received communion during the 10:30 am and noon Masses, according to a statement from the county health department.

...

At least one member of the clergy involved in the communion process was infected with the disease, Laurain said.

5. I still don't understand why they all drink from the same cup.
If I see this at a service I realize that it's not a church for me. Because the only way that anybody would do something like that in this day and age is because they really do believe that wine turns into blood, or they are just stupidly ignorant of basic hygienic facts.

6. It's because it's more important to perserve what is thought to be
an early Church custom and/or by actions prove the Real Presence than to use something like this:

In order to prove the Real Presence to all those Protestants (sarcasm), the Church makes a big deal about how Communion vessels must be gold lined and how every last drop and crumb must be properly cared for. The more Right wing/conservative/orthodox/pre-Vatican II, the greater this emphasis is.
