Christian Flag Causing Controversy Again
As a result of the limited public forum policy adopted by the City of King last fall, the week of June 6-12 was the only week of the year that no flag of any type was scheduled to be flown on the pole which once displayed the Christian flag at all times.

Yet the Christian flag was in evidence that week nonetheless. A group was present at the Memorial to display a mobile version of the banner which caused such an uproar last fall when a King resident protested its presence on one of the flagpoles at the Park.

--snip--

Meszaros added that she and her sister, who actually entered their dad’s name in the lottery, have never disrespected a veteran by coming to the Park and flying a different religious flag while the Christian flag was up.

“As such, I would only ask for the same respect during our week to honor our father,”
Meszaros requested.

Her request fell on deaf ears as a group protected a Christian flag flying on a private, mobile flagpole during the hours of the Park’s operation. This group could not be removed from Central Park because they were technically breaking no law. They had the right to be at the Memorial during the normal operating hours of the Park and could fly the Christian flag on their private pole as long as it was attended.

“In flying the Christian flag at the Memorial this week, they have dishonored themselves, not my father and not the thousands of other non-Christian soldiers,” Meszaros declared.

2. There's "a" Christian flag?
I would think there would be at least a couple of thousand different designs, each claiming to be the One True Flag.

4. The story is really really really inspiring:
on September 26, 1897 .. the .. superintendent of a Sunday school .. was forced to give an impromptu lecture .. because the scheduled speaker had failed to arrive ... Overton .. gave a speech asking the students what a flag representing Christianity would look like ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Flag

So, you see, this is an ancient and venerable thing, born from deep meditation on the profound theological question "How can I keep these kids busy for an hour?"

Coming up next week: The official Christian doughnut

6. Yes there is, and there is a Pledge too

When I was at Fundie School in Jr High, we had to pledge to both the American, and the Christian Flag

And these fucks tell me they don't want a theocracy....riiiiiight

I pledge allegiance to the Christian Flag and to the Savior for whose Kingdom it stands. One Savior, crucified, risen, and coming again with life and liberty to all who believe.

5. When I went to a baptist school we had to pledge allegiance to that and the Bible.
I did it for a few years in middle school and then I began to grow up. I don't pledge allegiance to any flag and I certainly won't pledge allegiance to a 2000 thousand year old book of fables and myths, not the Constitution that might me worth pledging allegiance to.

8. Yeah looking back it was all very creepy.
I can still remember some of the words of the pledge "I pledge allegiance to the savior and his kingdom for which it stands." That sounds theocratic to me. A kingdom in heaven wouldn't have a flag or standard, but if you take the view that they want to turn America into a new Zion it makes sense.

9. I love the line "One Savior, under God" - makes me think of Python's Last Supper Sketch
"Three Christs?!?!?!"

"The two fat ones balance out the skinny one!"

10. "and coming again with life and liberty to all who believe."
Those words sum up their views perfectly. Life and liberty for all who believe, not life and liberty for all. If you don't believe, well you are screwed.
