Russell Saunders and other atheists call for an atheist presidential nominee to right unbalanced
political representation in America

The question is a good one: Why don't we have an atheist candidate for president? Russell Saunders is a pediatrician who blogs on the popular site "The League of Ordinary Gentlemen." His blog is asking the same question many other blogs are asking. Will there ever be an atheist presidential candidate in our lifetime? We wrote an article a while back in which American Atheists' Dave Silverman was optimistic about having an atheist political candidate in our lifetime.

Yet no atheist has stepped forward to challenge the Republican field. Why is this?

Silverman said one reason for this was because:

"Atheists tend to be separationists and shy away from anything that resembles religion," Silverman said in response to Pakman's question as to why atheists are not a political force. He claimed that atheists outnumber Buddhists, Jews, Muslims, and Hindus — combined and doubled — in America."

Russell Saunders, on the other hand, is very vocal about what he thinks of the current political field of candidates, calling Rick Perry a "ten gallon asshat," and actually analyzing why the religion of the current field, particularly Michelle Bachmann, is not good for the country:

5. In this case defeatism is realism. An atheist national candidate = nice but pointless 50 years min.

14. We'd have a better chance of electing an avowed socialist.
Besides, religion really isn't supposed to be a legitimate consideration for public office.
