Church/State Separation Advocates = Terrorists
That’s what the mayor of Whiteville, Tenn. says after the Freedom From Religion Foundation sent a letter threatening to sue the city if they don’t remove a cross from the top of the town’s water tower.

“They are terrorists as far as I’m concerned,” said Mayor James Bellar about the Freedom From Religion Foundation. “They are alleging that some Whiteville resident feels very, very intimidated by this cross.” …

“A terrorist is more than a guy that flies the planes into the building,” he said. “It’s anyone who can disrupt your way of living, destroy your lifestyle, cause you anxiety. It’s more than killing people. If they can disrupt your routine in life, that’s what they want to do. They are terrorists as far as I’m concerned.”

Um. Yeah. Because that makes them just like terrorists.

“It’s just a cross on the water tower,” he said. “All we’re doing is exercising our right to practice our beliefs down here but this organization is now going to stymie that. We’re not out here knocking on doors trying to convert people.”

This has nothing to do with anyone’s right to practice their beliefs. And the mayor would know that instantaneously if it was a Muslim star and crescent on the water tower instead of a Christian cross. Ironically, if it was a Muslim symbol rather than a Christian one, he would undoubtedly be calling those who put the symbol up terrorists, rather than those who want to take it down. It all depends on whose side is being pierced, so to speak.

1. By Mayor Bellar's "definition" of a "terrorist", that would make John Scopes
a terrorist in Dayton, TN in 1925 for teaching evolution in a public school.

BTW, Scopes was a patsy, put up to volunteering to be a defendant as the idea of a trial on evolution was part of a civics group in Dayton on how to boost their economy.

2. Nothing new under the Sun.
The Calvanists and the Federalists were accusing Thomas Paine of the same things in 1790 because of his Diest position. They were blaming natural disasters on the ungodly diests even then. They were also calling those who advocated for Democracy dirty, filthy, substance abusing rabble. Sound familiar?

3. Why is it that the Catholics forget about how scared the Republicans were
that Kennedy would take orders from the Vatican?

Where's their outrage there? Or the fact that most Republicans support the Death Penalty, which is yet another issue the Catholics are generally against (unless it keeps them from voting for a Republican)?

And for that matter ... Wal-Mart sells contraception ... why do Catholics shop at Wal-Mart? Or any other place that sells contraceptives?

4. hey, since the religious reichies are pushing the idea that "Atheism is a religion"
why not have an Atheist sue to have his religious symbol on top of the tower? Have "nothing" on the tower, instead of the cross ...

6. Wow. Well, MY beliefs support secular government.
Those who want to make this country and its government Christian only are seeking to disrupt my way of life, destroy me free-thinking lifestyle, and are causing me anxiety.

My point of view is supported by old texts (First Amendment, Federalist Papers, writings of Jefferson and Adams) and revered prophets (Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Paine among others). I want to turn back the clock to the good old days of the Enlightenment when great thinkers were openly critical of religion.

8. According to a certain DUer
Advocates for separation of Church and State are just like the Nazis. So this dude claiming they're terrorists isn't all that surprising.
