White House Petition: Edit the Pledge of Allegiance to remove the phrase "Under God".
The Pledge of Allegiance is said every day in schools across America. It is a government sanctioned speech, and should remain neutral in matters of religion. In its current state, it supports the existence of God, which goes against several religions, and supports others. This bias should not be supported by the country according to the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For all of the good reasons that "under God" should be taken back out and the Pledge restored to its original version, the only reason I need is because we are NOT "One Nation Under God." That is just not a true statement.

1. The White House is kinda non-committal on the subject.

2. Glad we're down to #7,422 on the to-do list. Everything else must be great now!

Also, since Obama has been wearing his American flag lapel pin lately, this will give the GOP some real red meat to throw to the baggers at the next debate. Yay.

4. Actually, I don't think it's up to a President to remove those words..
Edited on Wed Oct-19-11 11:50 AM by David Sky
but if you think this is a make or break item for "red meat" election politics, I'm willing to wait until 2013 to have those words removed, and the "In God We Trust" taken off our currency, too!

I think it's up to Congress, not the President, to do it, as I believe Congress was involved with putting those words there in the first place, during the Ike years, after the McCarthy hearings, the red scare, and during the cold war.

6. Creeping theocracy is much higher on my list than that.
Your mileage might vary, I guess.

8. It's been 55 years.
Not exactly a hot-button topic.

9. And the pledge is used to justify
many more examples since. "Of course we are a Christian nation; it's in our pledge and on our money."

11. So now they'll say "on our money".

"...and it used to be in the Pledge until Obama and his godless liberal hippies took it out."

And don't you think the House will just put it back in?

It's a lose/lose issue. And has zero impact in the lives of anyone not in elementary school.

13. It would be...
if Obama came out and said "Hey guys, taking "under God" out of the Pledge is a really great idea that will make America great again." It would be very big news and it would not end well at all.

14. Don't feel bad
Every time a gay rights topic comes up we're dismissed with the same attitude. Such things are trifles to others, and it's wrong of us to even mention them lest they take attention away from More Important Matters.

7. One of the things that the fundies appeal to when they want to post the 10 Cs somewhere...
is how "In god we trust" is already on our currency and "Under god" is in our pledge.

We were told "don't ask don't tell" was a non-starter too. Glad not everyone shared your attitude.

10. How many times have you said the Pledge of Allegiance since you left elementary school?
Me: Probably a dozen times in 40 years.

12. In Wisconsin
it is state law that we must say the pledge or have the National Anthem EVERY DAY at EVERY GRADE LEVEL. I hear it EVERY FUCKING DAY.
