Donegal priest prayed for Gadafy
Edited on Mon Oct-24-11 10:07 PM by rug
The Irish Times - Tuesday, October 25, 2011

FORMER LIBYAN dictator Muammar Gadafy was prayed for at Mass in a Donegal church, it has emerged.

The prayers were said on Sunday in St Eunan’s Church, Raphoe, by parish priest Fr Dinny McGettigan (72).

The popular priest surprised parishioners when he was praying for local people who had recently died.

The last name he read out was that of Muammar Gadafy.

I like this. My church bulletin lists all parishioners serving in the military and asks to keep them in our prayers. During Mass we're asked to pray to keep them safe. Not once are we asked to pray for the victims of war. Not once, unless there's a scriptural reading, are we asked to pray for our enemies. And it's not really about prayer, it's about a mindset that draws a line through humanity.

1. I always offer prayer for those serving in any nation's military,
and for the victims of war and all forms of violence. Not everyone likes it, but not enough to threaten my job. I also pray for diplomats and members of the Peace Corps.

2. How is this unusual?
He's dead. I thought it was quite common for the religious to pray for the dead.
