Putting up a Holiday Tree goes against the Bible and the Will of God
Jeremiah 10:1-4

Hear ye the word which the LORD speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:

Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.

For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.

They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.

Why, it's HEATHENISTIC and as such is WORSE THAN HOMOSEXUALITY!!! To do this is IDOLATRY and is forbidden in the DECALOGUE ABOVE EVEN THE SIN OF ADULTERY!!!!!

2. True enough
....that's why many Christians do not celebrate (or participate in) Christmas.

This is specially the case with many fundamentalists.

5. That's such baloney.
I like what this guy has to say about it:

http://answers.org/holidays/isgodaginxmas.html

You can agree with him or not, but all Biblical discussion aside, it's hard to argue with his basic statement, which is that "We'd have very little left if we gave up everything which is abused or misused."

I think Christians who have convinced themselves that "God is against Christmas trees" are as bad as those who have convinced themselves that Halloween is "Satan's holiday." I.e....they're self-righteous prigs without a leg to stand on.

3. What is it about Christmas and Fundamentalists?
First they create it (3rd? 4th century?). Then they ban it (1600's).

Now they want it mandatory.

10. Fundies want to keep changing the rules about everything
That way they always have something to bitch about, and a reason to throw their power around. Wreaking havoc is the only thing that gives them a reason to live. :eyes:

6. That makes me want to put a tree up
I am atheist, and hearing the lovely statement that "trees are evil" makes me really want to put up a holiday tree. HA! Holiday Tree!!

I've never done it. I'm going to this year, Thanks for the heads-up.

14. Canada is a great place for Yule trees.
You can be a Pagan one day out of the year. I'm an atheist, but I still enjoy the Yule tree celebration. It's more of a celebration of nature for me, and a time to slow down and enjoy life, music, friends.

9. I want one of those 1960's silver tinsel trees with the colored...
rotating lamp shining on it, if I have to have a tree. And Mr. Zookeeper and Zoochildren say that we do. I'm so tired of the whole x-mas hoo-ha that I want the weirdest tree I can find.

12. As an Atheist, can I keep my tree?
It has lots of pretty lights and a star on top but no angels. It's made from plastic so maybe it isn't even a tree. I'll just call it my "Plastic Multi-Colored Light Emitting Holiday Festivus Solstice Decoration" to be safe.

You've come up with the most clearly description name. More fact, less "x-mas magic."

15. High-jacking pagan traditions is what helped "grow" Christianity.
Who would convert to a religion where you have to give up all your sabbats?

22. Organized Christiany is all about marketing...
...that's why "the church" has co-opted so many pagan customs. What seems to be important in Christianity is making the sale, not the integrity of the product.

17. Would that it were true.
Context, people, context.

The verses in Jeremiah refer to idols made of wood, not "holiday trees." Try reading a different translation, including verse 5, and you'll see what I mean.

If we're going to play this game of dueling bible verses, we have to play it honestly or there's no point.

You can compare various translations with a click of your mouse here:

18. Well said. There is plenty to pick at without stretching verses beyond...
context. Let's just enjoy the holiday season, and leave the abuse of religious texts to the Talibush theocracy.

20. "Damned Christmas Tree"
Gee, that's what my dad always called it. Of course, "damned" was his favorite adjective for just about everything.

damned dog
damned kids
damned house

21. Hey, damned ornaments, damned lights, damned decorations. etc
TEEHEE, I am making good progress this year. Next I am going to send out my damned CHRISTMAS cards (not the holiday cards)
and my Christmas gifts to people out of town.

When I heard that "holiday" stuff the last few weeks, I thought I was going nuts.
