<snip>

Pope Benedict XVI complained this week that Christmas festivities have been "subjected to a sort of commercial pollution."

3. the rat just noticed? I hear that some still use that term of endearment
within the vatican.

Let's see.
Evolution is right, then it isn't, then it is again, then we aren't sure.
gays can serve as priests, then they can't, now they can if by some squirrly standard they haven't acted obviously gay in the past three years. (whatever that means)
Sex abuse by priests is important, then it isn't, and now some are getting away it under his explicit orders.
Christmas is now to commercialized. I wonder how long this stance will last.

6. I wish the Pope would declare war
on the gold grubbing televangelists and the philistine fakers who call themselves fundies.

9. This from a guy that wears Prada shoes and Gucci sunglasses.
This Pope is much more of a "European" than the last one.

10. As a Catholic, I agree with
posters 7 and 9. Before complaining about the excesses of others, he should remove himself from the opulence and grandeur of the Vatican.

And, those Prada shoes are red ruby - not exactly the footwear of a humble man... I don't care if it is tradition.

I may not have agreed with John Paul II on many issues, but at least he lived what he preached. That I could respect. In this instance Benedict is reminiscent of a televangelist wearing expensive shoes and jewelry living in a mansion, and asking poor people who are barely surviving to send them money...
