St. Louis archbishop excommunicates leaders at Polish parish
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' Roman Catholic archbishop said Friday that a priest and the six-member board of directors at a traditionally Polish parish have been excommunicated.

The severe penalty excludes the seven from taking part in church sacraments and functions and from holding positions within the church.

For nearly two years, St. Louis Archbishop Raymond Burke and St. Stanislaus Kostka's lay board of directors have been feuding over control of the parish's property and assets.

Unlike other Catholic parishes around the country, the board - rather than the archbishop - has governed St. Stanislaus Kostka and its finances, according to an arrangement dating to the late 19th century.

I'm lapsed, but from a Catholic family in St. Louis, so this is what everyone at my house is talking about today.

1. They should tell the Archbishop to screw himself
and join the Polish National Catholic Church. I knew a priest in the PNCC in my home town, and he was a good guy. I'm no Catholic, but that's what I'd do.

2. So the Catholic Church will deny someone the sacrements...
...which they claim are "required", if they don't pony up the cash and property. Gee, I'm SHOCKED!!!

5. This isn't about faith. It's about money.
The Catholic Church is a business and the archbishop wants the revenue and apparently will go to extreme lengths to get it. The Catholic religion is very strong among Polish people. The archbishop is stupid to have picked this fight. It's a no-win for him.

6. Well, money is serious stuff to The Church. Unlike raping children.
If all they'd done were rape little boys, they'd have been okay.

Instead, they argued about money.

And not letting the bishop play with Gawd's money makes Baby Jeebus cry.

9. Because then the priests would have nothing to keep them from talking
They've probably made a deal: Keep your mouths shut about just how many kids you raped and how we helped you cover it up, and you won't be excommunicated.

There are special convents for pervert priests where they can be kept comfortable and quiet after they've been busted.

10. Burke knows the power of the office and is using and abusing it
He clings to the "mini-kingdom" model of the church were the parashinors give lots and lots of respect to the bishops (and many priests).

He has let the power go to his head. Of course Burke has been on the forefront in pushing this type of "Orthodox" Catholism, which is follow the rules 100% or you are not "Catholic". He was just as bad when he was Bishop of LaCrosse, WI.

13. Stupid question, but
Is there a way for the parishoners/priests to appeal this or disobey it?
