My thoughts about God vs. G-d/G*d on the internet
I know this might sound boring, but I've been thinking about this occasionally when I see it come up on the net, and hopefully this might be an interesting thread for those of you who like the minutiae of theology.

Here's my thinking. I do not know of any other religions beside my own, Judaism, where any sizable percentage of adherents prefer to write G-d on paper. The reason for this, as I understand, is to prevent the desecration of the word God when that piece of paper or whatever it's written on ends up on the floor, or in a trash can or paper shredder or whatnot. To me, the practice of writing G-d as a stand-in is perfectly acceptable when people take this view. I myself use G-d when writing.

On the internet, however, I think things are different. Since this is only a virtual world, and these words don't really exist except on our computer screens, I don't think it's a big deal that the word God will eventually be destroyed somehow. When I go to another page, what happens to them? It would seem that nothing happens. Did they ever exist in the first place? I think not. For this reason, I don't think it's important to write G-d on the internet, although I won't roll my eyes at those who do, since I can understand where they're coming from.

What do you think?

1. Reminds me of that scene from "The Life of Brian"
where the old guy is about to get stoned for saying "Jehovah".

(Matthias is about to be stoned to death)
Matthias: Look, I don't think it should be a sin, just for saying "Jehovah".
(Everyone gasps)
Jewish Official: You're only making it worse for yourself!
Matthias: Making it worse? How can it be worse? Jehovah! Jehovah! Jehovah!

Stoning Emcee: Nobody is to stone anybody until I blow this whistle — even, and I want to make this absolutely clear, even if they do say, "Jehovah". (he gets pelted with rocks)

2. That's something I never got.
The word "God" is not the same thing as the idea of God or any possible reality thereof. Hell, it's not even "Adonai," which I suppose I can understand observant Jewish actors not saying when a prayer is in the script. Of course, neither the word God nor the word Adonai is the name of God, the "I am what am" that is not to be taken in vain.

3. I didn't know that.
How interesting.

I look forward to hearing others weigh in on this.

If people think of God's name as that holy, that putting it down on a piece of paper runs the risk of accidental destruction of that name, then that's very observant of their religion, and I can definiately respect that. On the Internet, I'm sure there's some reason they write "G-d". Whatever it is, they're allowed, although I would be interested in their reasoning. On the other hand, we all know that some people don't think or believe along those lines, and if that's what they want to do, then I'm all for letting them do it.
To each their own, I guess is what I'm saying.
