Why is Pat Robertson's God such a jerk?
In light of recent comments made by Pat "Roberto" Robertson on his show, The 700 Club, I'm sure a lot of people are probably wondering this question. First he dabbles in assassination of foreign leaders. Then he muses that the pious residents of Dover, PA shouldn't turn to God because they voted off members of the school board that wanted to teach ID in science classes. Then the comment about New Orleans. And the icing on the cake, for me, has got to be Robertson saying that Ariel Sharon had a stroke because he was "dividing God's land" (of course he apologized for that comment...after Israel said they would not allow him to build his Christian theme park there). What a chach (God, not Pat Robertson...well, okay, take your pick).

I'm certainly no theologian, but I was always under the impression that God was supposed to be a God of love - or at least that's what the missionaries tell me. It strikes me that sending the gulf a hurricane and causing Sharon to bleed out in his brain are not really "loving" things to be doing, but rather just the opposite. How can so many people claim that God is loving and in the next breath voice their opinion that God is basically a punitive father figure who will kill you if you do things he doesn't like?

1. YEAH TRY TO EXPLAIN
I live in a not so tolerant section of the country and down here you would think that god is a schizo, he HATES abortion but LOVES the death penalty. He hates HOMOS but ignores ADULTERERS. Oh well. He LOVES handguns and Bazookas, but MICHAEL MOORE should be jailed. Not the god i grew up with.

2. I think Robertson is no different than all the innumerable charlatans and
demagogues throughout history who have used God and/or religion to legitimize their own private grab for power and influence. Welcome to DU!:toast:

He loves you...as long as you are good.
I was raised in a Southern Baptist Church. I am still in recovery.

As I understand it, God loved us...but he would burn us forever in hell
if we did not accept Jesus as our personal saviour and do what our
preacher told us was 'christian'. As for Buddhists, devout Muslims,
saintly atheists,(and agnostics) etc., (oh yeah...catholics too) they
were all going straight to HELL. TO BURN. FOREVER.

Now, that is not difficult to understand is it? Why are you even
thinking about it? Don't you know that God said what the rules are?

If you are doubting that its that simple...see, that is the devil
talking to you.

19. I agree but also,he has to think through his own
polluted mind and thats how God comes out for him. He is projecting his own personality on God. I read once a long time ago that people think about God the same way they think about their father.

4. Because Robertson distorts the Gospel
of love and acceptance, the Gospel of being the voice for those who have no voice, the gospel in which speaks to "Christ's preferential option for the poor!"

That is why when one talks about Pat Robertson or any of the fundies, there is a shallowness to their faith.

IMHO it is faith of the "prosperity gospel" whom can we exclude and what is in it for me!!

Not exactly Christ's teachings!

5. He has a choice
Christianity has a choice -- it can offer hope, or fear.

Robertson finds fear more profitable. As do almost all right-wingers.

6. Well, it is because
You asked, "How can so many people claim that God is loving and in the next breath voice their opinion that God is basically a punitive father figure who will kill you if you do things he doesn't like?"

There is a simple answer that you might not like. Those people are insane. And yes, that means that probably about 50% of the people you meet every day are out of their freaking minds -- at least when it comes to their belief in the supernatural. Fortunately most of them don't actually integrate religion into their lives excapt on occasion when people die or get trapped in coal mines. So they aren't continuously insane.

It's like having to live under occupation.

11. A big mystery anyone believes in Pat's gawd...
Pat's gawd is a gawd of action. Smiting the sinners at every turn. Yep, a big bad powerful deity able to leap tall buildings, toss around hurricanes and tsunamis, capable of pinpoint surgical strikes against wicked dictators.

Pat's followers probably get all worked up at the thought of a military jesus. But wait, what happened with Saddam and Osama? Why did we have to attack, we being the greatest nation on gawd's green earth? Why didn't gawd strike them down, saving American lives? For that matter, what about all WWII. I thought the Jews were gawds chosen people. Hell of a way to treat your chosen people. Gawd punishing Dover Pa? What about Las Vegas, Amsterdam, New York etc etc. Lots of scrumptious sin sin sin in those locals, but not a peep from the all powerful gawd.

Excuse me, we have found the lord. Sadly he cannot communicate at this time he is losing big time at the craps table and has a date with a call girl in one hour. Jesus in Vegas, coming to a theater near you.........

14. Once a hypothesis is accepted...
anything can be interpreted to support it. IOW, if you accept that there is a vengeful god who will kill you if you do something you don't like, then all you really have to do is wait. Eventually someone you don't like will have a tragic event in their life, and then you can be right there to offer an explanation as to why.

Oh, maybe it's the craps table thing...

20. Bingo
If jesus was into the bling, why did he hang around a bunch of poor folk. The Pat jesus would own property in Rome, Jerusalem, and hop around in a 500 HP, er I mean a 5 HP horse drawn chariot. What bible is Pat reading. The greedy self serving narcissist version?
