8. I believe
that G-d is a Jewish concept to avoid taking the lord's name in vain. I might be wrong on the religion, but that is the intent of spelling it that way.

9. Yeah... someone explained that to me too. I believe you're correct...
Edited on Thu Mar-23-06 11:37 AM by arwalden
... about it being a Jewish-thing. Apparently it would be blasphemous to write down the full word "God" onto something that could later be destroyed. The actual letters "g-o-d" make the item into something that's holy... or something like that.

But still, when someone write "g-d"... isn't the meaning still the same? They are just symbols to convey and idea, so if everyone automatically understands that "g-d" actually means "god" then shouldn't all things with "g-d" written on them be considered to be holy too?

It kind of reminds me of the folks who get upset with the word "bitch" but "b-tch" or "-itch" is okay. As if it somehow loses its meaning and becomes (even in context) too ambiguous. --- So when I call Katherine Harris a real "-itch", everyone's wondering whether or not I mean "witch". :eyes:

edit: typo

G-d was developed to show lack of gender of God. Personally, I see God as without gender - the male label is symbolic for me, since Mary is considered Jesus's mother.

12. Where's the "waiting for any evidence of gods to show up" kind?
Is that included under choice #1?

I guess that would make sense, as it's not very logical to believe in things for which there is absolutely zero credible objective evidence.

13. It isn't logical, no.
But I don't think believers should have to justify their beliefs by logic. With religion, I think intuition is much more important.

15. Beliefs concerning the supernatural
Edited on Fri Mar-24-06 11:03 AM by catbert836
are impossible to scientificaly or logically prove. Sure, it is reasonable to demand proof, but the case is that most people can't do anything of the sort. Religious beliefs ARE arational. So what? My personal beliefs about the supernatural require no proof at all for ME to believe them. Since I don't care about proselytizing, I don't need to prove them to others.

16. That's a good point - but you're not the only kind of believer.
Of course YOU (one of my favorite believers and DUers, bar none) don't need to offer evidence to us to back up your beliefs, because you recognize they are a-rational and most importantly you're not pushing them on others.

But many DO insist that their beliefs and chosen religion are the only correct ones (just look at a certain fundamentalist in this very forum) and are scientifically proven (which is, of course, wishful thinking on his part). Those people most emphatically DO have a requirement to offer evidence when they make such assertions.

But with guys like you, it's all good, because your beliefs are your own, and I myself would never try to get you to repudiate them. They're not harming me in the slightest, and even though I don't agree with you (probably - not exactly sure what you believe now, and it's not really my business) I still think you're one hell of a person.

25. Aw, thanks.
And I most definitely agree. Those who claim their beliefs are the only correct ones, and/or that they can logically or rationally prove the a-rational must have evidence to back up their claims.

Actually, I'm not sure what I believe now either. It's kind of a mix between pantheism, Taoism, Confucianism, Buddhism, and other such things. Like you said, it's all good. :toast:

17. Hardcore malthiest
On the remote chance that God exists, then he/she/it/whatever is the most cruel and venal creature in existence, and it is our duty as sentients to cast down that creature and obliterate it from all memory.

23. Having accused him of having a bad attitude,
the sort that "no one likes", it seemed only fitting to suggest that he work to improve it. The second sentence was thus intended to refer back to the then current subject line, rather than the content of the original message. Guess it was a bit opaque. Obviously didn't work for everyone. Sorry.
