Cardinal: Condoms 'Lesser Evil' to Prevent AIDS

VATICAN CITY (1010 WINS) -- A senior cardinal who was considered for the papacy last year said in comments published Friday that the Roman Catholic Church should soften its ban on condoms because of the scourge of AIDS.

(snip)

... Cardinal Javier Lozano Barragan of Mexico, who has said condoms could sometimes be condoned, such as when a woman cannot refuse the sexual advances of her HIV-positive husband.

"when a woman can't refuse the advances of her hiv-positive husband" i.e., marital rape.

5. I don't think the Church makes a distinction there...
A woman is obligated to "put out" according to doctrine as I understand it.

It's not rape to take something to which you're entitled. :sarcasm:

9. Back up the excommunication wagon - we got a blasphemer!
Always fells good when a prince of the church comes to the darkside. Condoms are Satan's tools. Nuff said.

11. Okay, folks, get a grip ...
A Catholic woman is, indeed, allowed to "refuse the advances" of her husband.

Cardinal Barragan was trying to avoid saying "rape".

He was also trying to avoid saying, "if you're gonna screw, kids, use a freakin' condom".

And chances are he's going to catch holy hell for this, although Benedict is turning out to be a lot less fascistic than I initially thought.

"Joey Rats" might just surprise us again.
