Gotta love those DU ads!
Edited on Sat Jun-24-06 07:26 AM by onager
I was just reading in the Atheist Group--ironically enough--and checked out the 4 "Google ads" on the page. In that Group, they're almost always some kind of religious hucksterism.

Because I enjoy laughing at religious kitsch, the ad I clicked on was:

Catholic Statues -- Indoor & Outdoor Statues 12" - 72" Pre-Vatican II Designs

Once at the site, I clinked a link that sounded like a lot of fun: Tract Packs.

Here's what I was offered. You'll notice these are right in tune with the liberal, progressive values of DU:

Tract Pack VI -- This Tract Pack provides a verbatim transcript from the Congressional Record of the Gay Agenda written in 1987. Tract Pack 6 also contains “The Bible and Homosexuality”, a list of Bible versus that condemn homosexuality, how the document “Always our Children” is flawed and defective, and Pope John XXIII’s specific instructions in 1961 not to ordain homosexuals to the priesthood.

Tract Pack VII -- Nine pages of invaluable information debunking the fourteen myths that have been used to persuade people into accepting the homosexual lifestyle.

Tract Pack X -- The outstanding article, He is Not Here, starts this collection. Next, is the hard hitting article, "Why Contraception is Wrong". Learn how the evil of contraception has caused the fertility rate in the West to drop below replacement level. One will next find out what the encyclical Humanae Vitae predicted. Tract 10 also presents the dirty little secrets about the birth control pill the pharmaceutical companies and doctors don’t want you to know because they would lose millions.

Tract Pack XIII -- Tract Pack 13 is extremely important because it tackles the abomination of abortion. The first article discusses the controversial issue of rape, incest and abortion. Next is a comparison of US war dead vs those slaughtered in abortion over the past thirty years. Pro-Life Patroness is a spectacular piece that holds the answer to end the murder of the unborn. Abortion is the #1 Killer, Partial Birth Testimony, and The Fate of Aborted Babies completes this hard hitting series.

misspell.

I guess I could get indignant about the ads I see here, but the way I see it, if the purveyors of this crap want their dogma revealed and ridiculed here, so be it! MKJ

2. That's why I turned them off.
The google bots are programmed to run ads that respond to whatever is being discussed. For instance, if I were to mention AC's full name, it would run an ad for her literary abomination on this page somewhere. For that reason, I also don't name or very rarely name the idiots in the administration or their minions who write books - I use their nickname instead if I can. I am probably alone in that decision about the google ads and of course I can't see the results of it as I have turned the blamed thingies off... but its my very small way of 'sticking it to the man'. :)

Hope DU gets lots of money from running those horrid things.

4. This pre-Vatican II as the link said
Which means it is the old-style ultra-conservative Catholics. They live in some idealized/stereotyped world where the Latin mass is the end all. Many trying to push the church back towards that.

Of course the material in these Tract Packs is also used by more modern ultra-conservative Catholics. I see these Tract Packs as a way for the followers to follow blindly and when approached with an opportunity to discuss these they have their talking point cards right there. People who are drawn to this will not question what is on the cards because it is "Church approved".

Ultra-conservative Catholics have many similar traits to fundies of any other religion just with their own unique twists. Of course Latin Catholics will not follow the religious right, because of the historical "hatred" of Protestants, even though many RCC policies now sound similar so the messages take a roundabout way to get to the followers.

5. If skinner and the crew can make a dime off them
then who cares. I actually find myself clicking ads quite frequently just to see where they lead....and of course, to make sure skinners getting paid.

7. I do give money to DU.
But the ads provide so much unintentional humor I'll probably just leave them be.

A frequent ad in the Atheist group says Jesus wants to "pursue a relationship with me."

If that happens, I'm getting a restraining order.

10. Oy vey
Tract Pack 6 also contains “The Bible and Homosexuality”, a list of Bible versus that condemn homosexuality,

Sometimes I think tracts like these are the only actual exposure right-wing whackjobs get to the Bible. Considering the fact that these Clobber Verses are often the only ones they can quote verbatim it certainly seems that way. :eyes:
