Poll question: Worst Christian-themed sculpture?
Edited on Sat Jul-15-06 11:20 AM by bob_weaver
Is it the new 72-foot tall "Statue of Liberation Through Christ?"

Is it the recent "Touchdown Jesus?"

Is it the 40-year-old "Christ of the Ozarks?"

Is it the 50-year-old "Mt. Soledad Cross" which is currently in the news?

Is it the traveling "Jesus on a Trailer Hitch?"

Is it "Buddy Jesus?"

Or is it some other masterwork? (Specify)

2. Maybe I should start my own poll
Why in the hell is it open season on Christianity in here? Should I start a thread mocking Islam and the Quoran and see how many jump on that bandwagon?

Half of the threads in here today make me sick. So much for tolerance.

8. Amen. And a couple of them come close to crossing the "graven images"...
...prohibition.

That's Statue of Liberty knock off manages to merge disrespect for our nation's values and Christianity.

I wish some of these people would show me where Jesus went around building gaudy statues.

9. Because of all the pathetic...
...Christian fundies in this country who are so starved for a feeling of their own relevance that they align themselves with someone so blatantly un-Christian as our Dear Leader. Why? Because he claims he's "born again" -- jes' like them -- a mistake which God, having allowed Bush to be born once, would certainly never repeat. Hatched, maybe; born again, no.

Many of which align themselves with radical leaders. I just don't see them mocked here.

25. Those lunatics are not on tv asking us for money sunday morning
They don't get face time on network tv and they don't have an inside route to the white house. They are marginal figures in the national political discourse not like say Pat Robertson who keeps getting on Mainstream TV whenever the media wants to hear the "Christian perspective" -
Personally just once I'd like to see a woman Episcopalian bishop being asked about the perspective of the Christian community rather then these well fed pink skinned lunatics.

16. This is on the same spiritual level of Elvis on Velvet.
And are the work of an idol worshiping authority cult who while they may use Christian symbols are far far off the mainstream Christian thought - you'll notice nobody but St. Patrick's up there or any of the lovely old New England Churches . The quakers would think these are tacky and stupid and missing the point. Would that make the quakers anti-christian?

I'm personally tired of people who say we're attacking Christianity when the excesses of the right wing churches are pointed out. Nobody is saying belief in Jesus as the son of god is to be mocked - but dear lord those statues are a) tacky as hell taste wise and b) in the case of the Statue of Liberty holding a cross a political statement of a desire for a dictatorial theocracy that runs completely counter to our political tradition a desire that can and should be answered with both barrels.

18. It would be nice
to maybe remind newbies that the "Christianity" being discussed here is the fundamentalists-who-love-Bush kind. I have no problem when people here talk disparagingly about fundamentalist Muslims, as long as they don't think all Muslims are that way. I would hope that all DUers are in support of progressive Christians, and that no one thinks all Christians are alike.

22. Why so shocked? Christianity is the dominant religion in the US.
And guess where most of us live? I'm much more concerned about radical and pushy Christianity in my backyard than some idiocy spouted by a cleric 8000 miles away. We are talking about the people who want to make their version of Christianity dominant in every facet of life, from what we watch on tv, to indoctrination of children in schools, to telling other people they have to live by their dogma, to making the Bible the law of the land.

And while certainly this isn't true of all or probably even most Christians in the US, it is a concern to those of us who wish people wouldn't try turning our country into a theocracy.

In my particular case, I see a lot of these pieces of "art" as being the antithesis of what Jesus preached (he wasn't real big on material displays of piety). Some of these, in particular, that hideous Statue of Liberty knock off are just plain offensive.

42. Dogma.
This was originally a prop from the movie Dogma with Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and George Carlin as the preacher presenting Jesus new image. This is a really funny movie and you should enjoy seeing it, unless you are a fundy.

Although I'd like to see somebody put up a "Flagrant Personal Foul Jesus" to protest torture interrogations.

"Christ on a Trailer Hitch" must be the new version of "Christ on a Crutch."

27. My Old Testament professor....
...told me one of the colleges where he taught had two statues, both visible from the football stadium, of a "religious" nature.

One was dubbed "Touchdown Jesus" (a pose similar to the above").

The other was a depiction of Moses holding the tablets in one arm with one finger raised high.

Yup....you guessed it.

"First-down Moses."

It may have been Notre Dame, but it's been too many years ago to remember.....
