Red Sox sellout streak reaches No. 500

BOSTON (AP)—The Boston Red Sox are throwing a party for the 500th straight sellout at Fenway Park.

Fans at the game have a chance to win food and prizes. One fan sitting 500 feet from home plate will receive two Fenway Park bleacher seats.

The streak dates to May 15, 2003. The attendance over the span was almost 18 million, and the Red Sox had a record of 326-173 over the first 499 games heading into Wednesday night.

The old major league record for sellouts was 455 straight games, set by the Cleveland Indians in 2001.

2. Maybe they could just slap a 3rd deck on there somehow
The only problem, as I can tell you, is parking :)

3. Haven't you heard?
Attendance doesn't matter..of course I don't really believe that, so with that in mind lets take a look at the bottom of MLB's attendance figures:

Average per game

28. Pittsburgh-17,539

29. Oakland-17,120 (the Bay Area is Giants country)

30. Florida-16,918 (3 time defending champion)

7. Interesting that you mention that!
World Series Championships....

Pittsburgh Pirates ---- 5
Oakland Athletics ----- 4
Florida Marlins ------- 2
San Francisco Giants -- 0

Really interesting statistic!

Thanks for the humour, cboy!

9. Those WS wins
only makes those team's woeful attendance figures even more disgraceful.

What a shame, a once proud Pirate franchise with a relatively new stadium now reduced to a farm team...In all seriousness, it must be frustrating rooting for a team who's ownership is not even trying to win.

I would assume that's why you've looked cross country and become a Cowboy fan. You know that Dallas, for all their faults, will go all out to win every year...even going so far as to sign felons and malcontents.

I promise to keep you updated regularly on the figures, as 3 teams are currently vying for the dubious honor of the lowest attendance in MLB...it's not all bad, at least your Pirates are in the running for something.

10. What does this streak prove? How does it matter?
Has it made them a better team because they've sold out so many in a row (in a stadium that only seats about 34K). Outside of the novelty of the streak, how does it matter?

11. This is why you see Red Sox (and Cubs) fans at away games all the time,
they can't get seats at home. I saw all sorts of Red Sox fans walking the streets of Cleveland this year. I went to opening day at Cinci a couple of years ago and almost half of the people there were wearing Cubbie blue. Every time I have seen the Cubs in Pittsburgh, probably a third were wearing blue.
