You do realize that by saying that will get you a beatdown in Baltimore? Seriously, we have a good thing going and the last thing we need to screw it up is having him on the team. And before you mention what Ray Lewis went through, newsflash--he was named MVP at the 2000 Super Bowl, so it's all about redemption!!!

Besides, I'm hearing the Patriots are sparking interest in Vick.

28. Anyone who thinks the Patriots won by cheating is an idiot, plain and simple.
There's a reason why people who actually pay attention voted Belichick Coach of the Year that year. Anyone with a modicum of football knowledge and some personal honesty knows he's a great coach. The guy is in the top 10 coaches of all time, easily. People don't like him because he's an arrogant prick, his team wins a lot, or they root for a team that lost to them and need something to cling to. So they blame the cheating to make up for their own team's inability to get the job done.

People can call me a homer or whatever, but I like the game itself more than any one team, including the Patriots, and I'd be saying this about any coach this good. Coaches like Landry and Lombardi and Shula never coached the Pats, but that doesn't stop me from acknowledging how great they were.

I've pointed out before that I have an NFL Films video from 1982 where they're talking about people trying to videotape signals as cameras became more and more widespread. So to think that this is new, or that the Pats were the only team doing this is naive beyond measure (that doesn't make it right, but it's dishonest to pretend the Pats were the only ones). Any new fan to the NFL can be forgiven for thinking this, but any long time fan should know better, and I suspect many do but just won't admit it. Plus, the NFL sent out a memo prior to that season to ALL teams talking about this issue specifically. They didn't just send it to New England, and there was a reason for that.

It's also funny that Lawrence Taylor gets praised up and down, yet he was coked out of his gourd when he played. And anyone who thinks that doesn't give you edge in speed has never done it. So it's pretty clear that doing something illegal that gives you an edge is ok...until your team loses to them. Then suddenly cheating matters.

It bothers me that the Pats did this, and I said at the time the penalty should have been higher, including forfeiting that game to the Jets, ending the unbeaten season right off the bat. But it's foolish to think that's why they won then, and it's even more foolish to think that's why they're winning since then.

46. And like I said, anyone who thinks that's why they won prior is an idiot.
This shit has been going on for decades. Before cameras teams would have some guy using binoculars to try to learn the signals. And that's one of dozens of ways teams have cheated over the years.

This is the kind of thing thats handled in house, and some coaches weren't happy with Mangini for taking this public. It's clear it was personal animosity between the two that was the motivation for this. What the Pats did was wrong, but people who already don't like them act like the Patriots shot their grandmother. This is like getting busted for jaywalking. What Vick did is a stain worthy thing. What next, complaining about Biletnikoff's stickum? Why not a stain on the teams that had punters and kickers that would doctor the footballs? Why do you think the officials pat down lineman before the game to check for any grease like substances? Why no stain on their accomplishments?

You should read this. When you're done come back and explain how all these examples are acceptable, or explain why you think all these players, coaches, team personal, etc should also have a stain on their accomplishments. And then ask yourself if you truly believe that not a single player or coach or trainer or team personal involved with the Cowboys over the years (with all their fine, upstanding citizens) never cheated in some way.

47. Dude! It's all perception. That's the way things work. Any time anyone
gets caught cheating, however it may have happens, the perception is that the victories are tainted. Right or wrong, that's the way it is. I can't change that.

That is all I am commenting about. I'm not commenting on other versions of "cheating" that may or may not have happened.

Just saying it's perception is a cop out. You CAN change it. Don't buy into it. It's a chump's game, and you can't ignore previous instances of cheating while harping on this just because it's more recent. Either all the cheaters deserve to have a stain on their accomplishments or they don't. I know you're not commenting on other versions of cheating, because it highlights the hypocritical position the people whining about the Patriots are holding. Pick a side of the fence and take a stand. ;)

And did you ask yourself yet if you truly believe the Cowboys have been cheat free over the years? If you think they never cheated then you're most likely insane. If you think they have will you hold them to the same standards you're applying to New England?

Edited on Wed Aug-12-09 02:06 PM by Forkboy
I'm not justifying what the Patriots did. You'll note I've said repeatedly on this forum, including this very thread , that everyone doing it doesn't excuse it. But it does give context to the issue at hand, which is cheating in the NFL. While it doesn't excuse the Pats , it also illustrates that the people claiming to take a stand on this based on principle are lying clowns if they're going to ignore the rest of the players and teams that have cheated before, and still do.

If others are getting dragged into this it's because they're being naive, hypocritical buffoons. Cheating is related to cheating. You're free to ignore other cheating as it doesn't pertain to YOUR idea of what the topic should be however. And I'll call that position cboy like, because it is. He wasn't big on context either. As long as this shit is going to be used as an excuse for why teams lost to New England I'm going to keep pointing out how stupid these people are regarding football, and how their position is totally hypocritical if they, like you're doing here, wish to ignore football history.

59. Actually, the pats aren't a source of angst to me. They clearly are to you, though.
You're the one who can't talk about them without bringing up cheating. You're the one who is either too stupid or too cowardly to try to explain how they won 18 straight after being caught. You're the one who is bitter. How does that make you feel?

The Sox thing is fair game. Ortiz is no different to me than the other roid users. I was busting his ass here the day the story broke. Have a field day with him. I don't give a fuck.

But the Pats stuff is childish bullshit by people who rooted for losing teams, including you, and by people who act like the know the game but apparently are clueless knob ends, also including you.

And how will you feel when a Phillies player turns up on the list, or do you believe they magically stayed clean through all these years? God know what they might have used.

Nice to see so many rushing in to fill the douchebag void left by cboy. You and mim should get a room for the night.

If the Pats are as good as you say they were(are) how come they had to cheat to win games? And if they were winning because they were cheating and the winning continued after they got "caught" one can surmise that the cheating continued. We are talking billichick here not Mother Teresa.

Scared? Of a question from you, that's funny.

The Phillies being clean or not is irrelevent to the continued angst of Bostonholics and the enabling of their sports teams. I don't enable the Phillies, I don't support the things they do wrong.

If the Pats are as good as you say they were(are) how come they had to cheat to win games?

Who said they would have lost if they hadn't? This is the point that you and madinmaryland just refuse to get no matter what angle I try to give it to you guys. I'm NOT bringing up other teams doing this to excuse any of them. Hey Mad, I know you're reading this, so here's that last sentence one more time.....

I'm NOT bringing up other teams doing this to excuse any of them.

Now that we've established that for what should be the last time, were I only dealing with people who were smart enough to tie their shoes....

The reason I bring up these other teams doing this is precisely because of what you ask here. I know the Patriots were the ones who got caught, but we all know other teams did it. So, again, the point isn't to excuse these teams because others were doing it also , the point is that if these other teams were cheating as well (and many of them were), why didn't they win as well as New England?

And tell me how, in detail, and with a straight face, how New England managed to win those 18 games through cheating. Don't float out your tired assumptions and paranoia based on no evidence like a Freeper. Tell me what they did, how they did it, and how the NFL missed it while watching them with a microscope. I know that facts and you are like Damien and holy water, but what the hell, try using them.

And if they were winning because they were cheating and the winning continued after they got "caught" one can surmise that the cheating continued. We are talking billichick here not Mother Teresa.

And Obama's birth certificate is a fake. One can surmise that you just assume the worst because you're a bitter old clown who rooted for the Eagles, and your fragile psyche can't handle the fact that they actually lost based on talent. You can't even spell the dude's name right. If you're going to hate someone take the time to get the handle down.

You go on and believe that the Patriots cheated to win 18 straight right after getting caught while the League was breathing down their neck and watching every move they made. You go on and believe that he was chosen Coach of the Year because all those voters were duped, but you, Bosshog, know better than the people who follow the game for a living. Bosshog, Homer Simpson t-shirt, warm Shlitz in hand...football super genius.

Oh, and here's your heroes oh so hard line stance on steroids....

In fact, when Schmidt was asked directly if he thought he'd have gotten caught up in trying performance-enhancing drugs had they been part of his era, he answered: "Most likely. Why not?"

67. "but we all know other teams did it". That's a really pathetic defense.
And how pray tell, do you know that? (Oh yeah, that's right! Don Banks implied so). We know that the Patriots and Belicheck were cheating, but where is your evidence others were?

**** crickets ****

Maybe you need to move on forkboy from this argument. We all appreciate that you are a fan of the Patriots and Belicheck, but your "everyone else was doing it" whine is getting mighty tiresome.

I couldn't have made the point any clearer. Maybe you need to move on before you convince everyone you're still a high school level thinker.

69. Dude! That is the only argument you have put forward.
Other than calling Bosshog names and me a high school thinker. Are you getting advice from cboy4 tonight?

It seem pretty obvious you are.

70. You either didn't read my post, or are as stupid as I'm beginning to suspect.

What part of these quotes from my post didn't you get?

1 - "I'm NOT bringing up other teams doing this to excuse any of them."

2 - "the point isn't to excuse these teams because others were doing it also.."

Don't blame me because you can't grasp what is really a damned simple point. Stop acting like a high school thinker and I'll stop calling you one. Deal?

71. Let's review this...

1.) Thank you for admitting the Patriots were caught cheating.

2.) How do we know other teams were cheating. That is an allegation that you continue to make without any support. other than Don Banks comments.

3.) You make a phony arguement claiming that since other teams are cheating, then why didn't they win. Since you cannot prove that any other teams were cheating as Belicheck and the Patriots were, that point must be discounted.

Maybe you need to lay off of the Red Bull for a few days and take a chill pill, my friend.

I did all along. Want the links to when the story broke?

2.) How do we know other teams were cheating. That is an allegation that you continue to make without any support. other than Don Banks comments.

Go review the thread I just started, just for you. Former players, and even *GASP*, Jimmy Johnson, who admits TO DOING THE EXACT SAME THING, say that cheating has been going on all along. Something that any actual NFL fan worth his shit should have already have known.

3.) You make a phony arguement claiming that since other teams are cheating, then why didn't they win. Since you cannot prove that any other teams were cheating as Belicheck and the Patriots were, that point must be discounted.

Since I HAVE now proven it, the point must be factored in, and I look forward to your reply saying that you agree that the Cowboys cheated EXACTLY like the Patriots, and how they too deserve an asterisk. After all, you don't want to be hypocritical like cboy now...do you?

55. Dude, you keep using the "everyone does it" defense.
Even reading the artical you linked to, just talks about how teams push the rules to the limit. Belicheck got caught. PERIOD.

Also from the artical:

"Though no disciplinary action by the league ever resulted, the Patriots last year were reportedly the impetus of a sternly written letter from the league office to all teams, reminding them that it was illegal for an advance scout or personnel official to bring a video recording device of any kind into the press box for the purposes of taping a potential opponent's signals or play-calling gestures from the sideline."

Belicheck was warned not to do it, and yet continued to. PERIOD.

Saying that everyone else did it, is a cop out. PERIOD.

Unless we count yours putting Vick's name in just to say no one is talking about him.
