Raiders' Head Coach punches assistant -- sends him to hospital
S.F. Chronicle, 8-17-09

Raiders coach Tom Cable assaulted a member of his coaching staff two weeks ago at training camp, putting the assistant coach in the hospital, according to two sources familiar with the incident.

Napa police confirmed a Raiders assistant was attacked by another member of the team staff on Aug. 6, but said the victim refused to name his attacker and declined to cooperate with their initial investigation. The victim's identity was also not revealed for privacy reasons, but multiple team and league sources identified him as Hanson, a third-year quality control coach on the defensive staff. The sources requested anonymity. And Cable was expected to address the matter later in the day Monday.

Cable was first identified as the one who struck Hanson in the jaw by the sports Web site AOL Fanhouse. Another site, the National Football Post, first reported the incident Monday morning without naming Cable.

Hanson ran into trouble last season, as well, when former Raiders coach Lane Kiffin suspended him for five days for insubordination, according to those close to Hanson.

Doesn't matter what Hanson did or said... there's no excuse for punching someone in the jaw.

3. There may very well be a good excuse for punching someone in the jaw.
When someone is just begging to be punched in the jaw sometimes you have to accommodate them. This guy sounds like a mouthy douche who got exactly what he asked for. I'm sure Cable didn't just sucker punch the guy for no reason.

4. In most cases, I'd agree, but if you're the guy's boss
you fire him, you don't hit him.

10. He might not have that authority.
Yes, he's head coach, but remember he works for Al Davis.

12. Good point.
If head coaches could fire assistants in Oakland, Kiffin would have fired Cable.

5. UPDATE
ESPN.com news services

NAPA, Calif. -- Oakland Raiders head coach Tom Cable denied reports, which surfaced Monday, that he punched defensive assistant Randy Hanson in the jaw and caused injuries that required treatment at a hospital earlier this month.

According to AOL FanHouse, Cable hit Hanson on Aug. 5 for unknown reasons. A report filed with the Napa Police Department describes an unnamed 41-year-old assistant coach being treated at the Queen of the Valley Hospital for a jaw injury, which the victim alleges was caused by an unidentified member of the Raiders coaching staff.

But Cable told ESPN's Mark Schlereth later Monday that no punches were thrown.

That's backed up by what former NFL scout Daniel Jeremiah told ESPN's Chris Mortensen. Jeremiah's "reliable source" said that Hanson broke a facial bone when his cheek hit a cabinet in a team meeting room when Cable flipped him out of his chair. Jeremiah also wrote on his Twitter page that Cable reacted when Hanson spoke profanely to defensive coordinator John Marshall. Cable rebuked Hanson, then pushed his chair, which caused the injury.

...six of one, half a dozen of the other...no excuse...you're the boss, set an example.

8. You're right, there is a difference, but neither is ok...
...sounds like lots of love and togetherness within the Raiders organization again this year.
