Brett Favre unretires to play for Vikings
In Another U-Turn, Favre Un-Retires

Well, that didn’t take long. Brett Favre, who only three weeks ago said he planned to remain retired, changed his mind yet again Tuesday, agreeing to join the Minnesota Vikings after all. It’s the second time in two years that Favre announced he was retired, only to reverse course soon after.

The Vikings, who had courted Favre throughout the off-season only to be left empty-handed on the eve of training camp, planned to address the media later Tuesday. When Favre initially said he would not come back, Coach Brad Childress said the team would move forward with the quarterbacks on its roster and had no interest in Favre.

But now, Favre is en route to the Vikings training camp. He and his wife Deanna were spotted boarding a team plane at the Hattiesburg, Miss. airport.

The U-turn in Favre’s future wasn’t a complete surprise. He had left the door slightly open for a return – likely only to the Vikings – back in July, but almost everyone expected that he wouldn’t make a move until the regular season. Instead, Favre becomes the Vikings starter ahead of Sage Rosenfels and Tarvaris Jackson with three preseason games remaining. He is already familiar with the offense run by his friend, the Vikings offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell. The Vikings have viewed Favre, 39, as the final piece needed to make them the N.F.C. favorite to reach the Super Bowl.

Does Michael Jordan still hold the record for retirements?

1. Farve owns every NFL record in the book, why not pad them and make them untouchable.....

Like the great Jerry Rice, whom I watched every game he was in with the 49ers.

8. well the NFL is likely going to 18 games
so that pretty much ends that talk. Just like when the NFL went to 16 games, all the records are coming down.

13. Unlikely...they've been talking about it for years.
Edited on Tue Aug-18-09 12:59 PM by LaPera
Just two pre-season games to evaluate, teams used to have six and even seven preseason games in the past to evaluate their draft picks free agents & walk ons 2 games ain't shit to evaluate it all and get the team ready properly....why not just have no pre-season games make it a twenty game schedule?

Or keep the 4 pre-season games and extend the season by too more regular season games?

Even the NFL knows that would make the season far too long, it would then go deep into February, from July-August training camps to Hall of Fame game to Pro Bowl at the end of February maybe the first week of March if they go to a second Bye week as they've also have been talking about....that would make the season training camp to finish well over seven months.

4. I never had him pegged at
being such a drama queen. Just retire already. We've got enough problems in the NFL without having to listen to "analysts" yammer endlessly about Favre during every game. I guess this way they'll be able to split their football "analysis" between Favre and Vick.

9. Someone seems to miss the spotlight
If I could live comfortably for the rest of my life just living off the interest from my investments (which I'm sure Favre can do) I know I'd hang it up and stop working. I'd find ways to keep myself engaged physically and mentally but I sure wouldn't bother with the routine of a job.

It's not like Favre's job is without risks either. There are enough examples out there to show that a football player's life can change pretty quickly just through a fluke hit. In the end, why continue to risk getting hurt when he could probably find a coaching or analyst's job without much effort.

10. Awwww...man...I'm so tired of this circus.
So Favre is on again as the Visqueens' QB? Wowsies! Will he make it through the exhibition season before his bicep blows again? What happens if it blows? The alternatives are not good for the Visqueens.

But...never mind. Favre will sell tickets and merchandise enough to pay for his contract, regardless. Favre will get his pocket protection so he can throw passes to receivers who have a penchant for dropping them.

The Visqueens will maybe make it to the playoffs. By then, Favre's old arm will be tired again and he'll be ineffective, so they'll put their young, inexperienced, untalented backups in and the Visqueens will be out of it early.

The Visqueen management will be pushing a stadium plan again this year, and will want a bunch of government (read taxpayer) money for it. The taxpayers will say, "Oh, Hell No!" and the Visqueens will be off to California. L.A. is looking for team, and the L.A. Vikings is a nice sounding name, after all.

Feh!

23. And that will be different how, exactly?
I like football, but I never go to any game where the Visqueens and the Pokers are playing each other. Way, way too much beer and testosterone.

16. Favre is like gonorrhea......
...sometimes it seems to go away but then it always comes back - chafing, puss oozing, itching & irritating.

In all my years of being a sports fan he's the only player I've wanted to see carted off on a stretcher. And it all started with his egomanical drama queen retiring/unretiring act.

17. I don't know if I want to see him carted off on a stretcher...
but I do agree that his egomaniacal Drama Queen act is really old.

I can respect an athlete for retiring and coming back once.

How many times has he come back? Three? Four?

He must be a lot of fun to live with at home: "What would you like for dinner, dear?"

"Uh...chicken. NO, wait! Pork Chops. Maybe not...gimme a second....spaghetti...PIZZA...chicken! Hold on...fried fish, yeah. NO NO! PIZZA!!!"

Good lord.

Anyway, I've lost respect for him for not knowing what the fuck he, a grown man, wants to do with the rest of his life, and for not facing the fact that he's not the QB he used to be.

19. Bring it on Brett, you whining, crying Douche bag!
As a Packers fan, I can't wait until he collapses, bringing the Vikings down with him. I just hope he doesn't get the coaches fired like he did with the Jets. Brad Childress as a Vikings coach is a Packers fan's dream. How else can we expect them to under-perform every year?

That's why he's one of the few pro athletes I enjoy watching.
