Brad Penny to sign with Giants
After going unclaimed on waivers, former Red Sox pitcher Brad Penny is finalizing a deal with the Giants, sources told SI.com.

Initially, no one claimed Penny because a claiming team would have been responsible for the remainder of his contract. The Giants only have to pay him the pro-rated portion of the big-league minimum of $400,000, which will be less than $100,000.

I was originally against this when it first came out that the Giants were among several teams vying for his services, but after watching their fifth starter, this time Joe Martinez, struggle again last week, I've changed my mind...heck, at these prices, why not bring Penny aboard and give him a shot?..

Lincecum
Zito
Cain
Sanchez
Penny

1. He's been giving up a lot of runs
And the Giants are not exactly a come-from-behind team (yesterday excepted).

Sabean must have given up on Sadowski too.

Yeah, for the money, I guess why not?
