Way to go Phil Michelson....
In case you didn't see it....Phil won the Bell South Classic after a 5-way sudden death playoff...

Licklitter and a guy I never heard of eliminated themselves on the first playoff hole by putting their respective second shots in the water.

Olazabal eliminated himself by putting it in the water on the 18th on the third playoff hole...

Phil went on to beat Rich Beem on the next playoff hole.

Sort of glad to see Phil win...he seems like an okay guy...don't know if he's a Repub.

1. Saw that
Olazabal had two chances to win and couldn't sink either putt. I was pulling for him or Beam because they hadn't won in a while. As for Mickelson, I like him but winning this tourney seems to be a jinx in the Masters this week. Only 2 people who won the Masters won the week before. BTW, all PGAers are repubs except for Notah Begay and possibly one more.

2. Watson's more of a moderate; don't forget the intl. players as well
Watson was the Ryder Cup captain who made the team meet with Clinton despite the fact that most of them did not support him. He also quit a KC country club as they wouldn't admit Jews as members. He might be a registered Republican (not sure on this), but he seems like a good man. Begay is definitely a Democrat (it was in a Golf Digest interview), and I'm sure a lot of the international players are not GWB fans.

Does anyone else think that Phil is primed for a season like Vijay's last year? Granted, Phil doesn't play as many tournaments, but he already has 3 wins. He's also gotten the major monkey off his back, which should let him play more relaxed in the majors (he was very impressive last year). It's also nice to see Olazabal get back on track. I was pulling for Atwal (the other guy), as he is new to the tour and doesn't have the exemptions that the others do (Olazabal - Masters, Beem - PGA, Mickelson - Masters).

3. Years ago Fred Funk said he was maybe the only registered Democrat on tour
I don't know if that still holds, but I rooted for him in the Players Championship partially for that reason. He's got Maryland ties so maybe it makes sense. Some DUers have suggested Scott Simpson is a Democrat. But I distinctly remember him sitting in the stands at Limbaugh's old TV show one night, grinning and clapping alongside Paul Azinger, who is pure Kool Aid.

I think that Doral loss to Tiger will damage Mickelson this year, especially if he's head to head with Tiger again. It's just one of my cherished sports theories, that the winner of an armageddon like that assumes new heights while the loser has a tendency to remember and crumble. It's phenomenal in college sports, which of course are very emotional. I use it for betting purposes all the time.

This has been the least energized buildup to the Masters ever. It begins in scant hours and not a single thread here.

4. Funk is GOP
He even said recently he 'hates Democrats'. Notah Begay is the only Dem I know of.

5. Azinger and Jacobson
Are both notable liberals. They have been vocal about it for YEARS! Jacobson did commercials for Mondale down in Florida!

Zinger is a proponent of single payer health care. They are not ALL tools. Just most of 'em.

6. Pretty interesting graphic from Golf Digest
Funk 'hates the Democrats', Duval is a Dem, and the survey had 26 for Bush and 8 undecided/other. W/r/t Azinger, I think he's more pro-military and national defense (his dad was a Vietnam vet) than anything.

7. Duval is a Dem?
Geez, 5 years ago he was an Ayn Rand devotee. Go figure.

Zinger is a dem. Trust me. He has let more than one use his name his campaigns.

These guys are generally silverspooners and they vote pocketbook. The game encourages individualism, but also there is a caste system and a status quo they don't want upset. They may be repubs, but mostly i think they're Rockefeller repubs, not Bushites. Now, you've got idiots like Perry and Love talking morality, but there are idiots in every walk of life.

8. I wasn't arguing on Azinger
I know he didn't like Clinton because of Vietnam (something to the effect of he didn't want to shake hands with 'that damn draft dodger'), but he does seem like a good guy. He seems like a hawkish Dem to me, but still a Dem. Duval is also interesting. He recently got married and has step-kids, which may have changed his perspective on life. With Perry and Love, I think it's more the Southern, Bible Belt thing.

9. Thanks for the chart, but I'm genuinely confused
I distinctly remember a Golf magazine or Golf Digest article from the early '90s in which Fred Funk was quoted as saying he was probably the only registered Democrat on tour. I might even still have that issue. I know I saved it for a while and reread the article.

And I definitely saw Azinger and Simpson applauding wildy on the Limbaugh show during the same time period.

10. Azinger Used To Make Fun Of Limbaugh
I met him at the Western Open. He was doing the stupid Limbaugh voice and said he played with him in a pro-am. He told the whole group that Rushbo cheats. Moves his ball, tried to shave strokes. I distinctly remember him saying "He's a tool!"

Simpson i knew about. He is also dumber than dirt. In reality, as an alternate rules official for that event, i've had to go to some meetings and i've met several of the top caliber players. They are not the brightest bunch. A few are sharper than sharp, but most of them are silverspooners who never actually worked a day in their lives. They went to college to play golf, but obviously didn't learn anything except how to hit the flop shot.

11. Yeah, that is weird
It doesn't make sense for him to be the one Democrat on tour (Notah has since joined the tour), and then hate Democrats later. Azinger is pro-military and pro national defense, but is supposedly (from other posts here) liberal things like health care.
