Golf & rugby sevens voted into Olympics
Golf and rugby sevens have been voted onto the programme for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The International Olympic Committee's executive board voted to include both at a meeting two months ago.

And the recommendation was confirmed by the 106 IOC members at a congress in Copenhagen on Friday.

Golf was passed by 63 votes to 27, with two abstentions, while rugby sevens had 81 votes in favour and eight against, with one abstention.

2. golf tournaments are already international
players from around the world participate in professional events every week. Turn on any PGA Tour event and you'll see players from dozens of countries. It was only a matter of time till they moved it into the Olympics.

3. The only reason baseball and softball were excluded was the argument that
they weren't competitive enough. It is a bullshit argument and has quite a bit to do with it being an "American" sport. The fact is Cuba, Japan and Korea all have very good teams.

Watch the ratings take a plunge.

5. Olympic baseball and softball sucked
The baseball tournament never included a full complement of the world's best teams, and softball wasn't much more than a victory lap for the Americans. I won't miss either sport from the Olympics a bit.

6. Sorry, I liked watching Olympic softball

and for most of the women, it's about the highest competitive level they could hope to participate in - softball is never going to be a pro sport. It was an affirmation of an amateur sport (just as women's hockey is) and I was very sorry to see it go. Golf, baseball, rugby - they all have their professional level. Softball was different. I'm extremely disturbed that they cut it.

7. Not true
In fact Korea, Japan and Cuba all field competitive teams. Both Korea and Japan beat the US in the World Baseball Championships.

4. Olympic sports
I've always thought that if the Olympics event should be the pinnacle event of that sport. For instance in Track and field that is the highest honor as is skiing or swimming. Sports that have bigger championships- Soccer- World cup- Tennis -Wimbledon etc. should not be included.

9. Good point
And I do think that Rugby 7's would come to have the Olympics are their greatest prize. The full 15 man Game would still continue to have the World Cup as their greatest honour though.

The came can't be said of Golf though IMHO.

10. Haven't enjoyed the Olympics since '72.
Terrorists at the end of that one, two consecutive boycotts, and that was it for me.
