DiMarco is making a game of this
Great final round so far. They're neck and neck with three to go.

10. Nike had to be happy with that shot...
The swoosh pauses for a second, then rolls into the cup. That's a commercial all by itself.

It was amazing how it stopped on the lip and then fell in.

14. Has anyone ever seen a shot like that?
I sure haven't. I'm really glad I watched the last half of the final round... that was really something.

8. Tiger completely ignored Mickelson in the Butler Cabin
He didn't even shake his hand after the green jacket presentation. Didn't even turn around and acknowledge him. I've watched this tournament for 30+ years and never seen that before. Mickelson might as well have been in the closet. Those two guys just aren't thrilled by each other. You could see it on the final green at Doral after Tiger won.

Phenomenal golf by DiMarco after the morning choke. He missed tons of makeable putts, but someone who putts with a grip like that is doing his damndest to mask putting problems. I never expect guys with unconventional putting styles to drain them on the final round of a major.

It's obvious these 2nd level guys hang in there with Tiger better than the established stars. He nipped a 19-year old Sergio Garcia, then Bob May and now DiMarco by 1 shot each in majors. The big guns back off for the Tiger coronation. I was surprised CBS had the guts to point that out today, a couple of hours after I posted it in a thread here.

Still, Tiger's game is somewhat off, more at the level of his '99 PGA Championship win over Garcia than anything from 2000 or 2001. He overswings about 5-10 times each round with horrible results, inevitably foul ball to the right. I can't believe CBS doesn't use Peter Kostis more for swing analysis. He had it dead on. Tiger has switched to new equipment -- graphite, huge clubhead, 45 inch shaft -- but doesn't always trust it. When he was still at 43.5 inch club length, steel shaft and standard clubhead he got frustrated by guys blowing it past him and tried to force things. If he completely flushes that from his system, look out. You can tell by the length of his backswing what the result will be, long before he makes contact.

9. Yep. When he goes past parallel, his hips get way in front of his hands...
then he either hits the ball with an open face (foul ball right) or he over compensates with the wrists and hooks it (foul ball left).

11. I'll Take His Swing
This seems like a case of analysis in search of a problem. The guy just won the Masters, for goodness sake. How bad can his swing be? And, remember if that putt doesn't slide off the green and into the hazard on Thursday, there's no playoff, and he wins by 2 or 3!

The swing he's working on is being designed for him to be able to rely on it when he's not a 29 year old stud athlete, but a 40 year old great golfer. He absolutely could not have held up with the swing he had when he hit the tour. His back would have been wasted by 35.

Also, in response to both of you, Tiger has always had such fast hips that he was prone to blocks and hooks. Every fast swinger is prone to that, especially if they have really fast legs. So, this really isn't anything new. When he's on, look out! When he's out of synch, he'll block or hook. That's how he's always been.

If i had his swing, right now, i sure wouldn't complain, and i have a pretty good swing now! But, i'd switch with him in half a heartbeat.
The Professor

13. Great tournament; good to see DiMarco valiantly fight back
Edited on Mon Apr-11-05 12:19 PM by ThorsHammer
I thought Eldrick was going to run away with it in the fourth round, especially after his quick birdie run to close the third. DiMarco did well to make a run at the end, and probably would have won against anyone else. Tiger's shot on 16 might have been one of the best I've ever seen. I still don't like Tiger's swing (more off the tee than anything) compared to what he once had, but that makes his win even more impressive. If he can ever get his tee shots tamed, he should be unbeatable.

EDIT: Obviously, I'd love to have his swing too. I'm just saying that it's still a work in progress, and that he will be at another level once it all works.
