The most valuable teams in the NHL..
Edited on Fri Nov-13-09 07:19 PM by Upton
The other day, Forbes released its annual report on the current value of NHL franchises and the overall financial state of the league..

MOST VALUABLE TEAMS

1. Toronto Maple Leafs-470 mil
2. New York Rangers
3. Montreal Canadiens
4. Detroit Red Wings-337 mil
5. Philadelphia Flyers
6. Boston Bruins-271 mil
7. Chicago Blackhawks
8. Dallas Stars
9. Vancouver Canucks
10. New Jersey Devils
11. Pittsburgh Penguins
12. Minnesota Wild
13. Los Angeles Kings
14. Anaheim Ducks
15. Colorado Avalanche
16. Calgary Flames
17. Ottawa Senators
18. Tampa Bay Lightning
19. San Jose Sharks-184 mil
20. Washington Capitals
21. Carolina Hurricanes
22. St Louis Blues
23. Buffalo Sabres
24. Edmonton Oilers
25. Columbus Blue Jackets
26. Florida Panthers
27. Nashville Predators
28. New York Islanders-138 mil
29. Atlanta Thrashers
30. Phoenix Coyotes

The NHL has long run a distant fourth among the North American professional sports leagues, befuddled with bogus investors (John Spano, William "Boots" Del Biaggio), rogue raiders (Jim Balsillie), television ratings you need a microscope to see and teams with huge losses (Florida Panthers) and debt woes (Phoenix Coyotes).

So leave it to the National Hockey League to have its most profitable year smack in the middle of a recession. During the 2008-09 campaign, the league posted an average operating profit (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) of $6.1 million, the highest figure in the 12 years Forbes has been tracking the league's finances. Aggregate revenue (including proceeds team owners get from non-hockey events at their arenas) last year increased $70 million compared with the 2008-07 season, to $2.82 billion. Despite the sour economy and tighter credit markets, the average NHL franchise is worth $223 million, $3 million more than the previous year.

1. The Sharks look like the best bargain on the board
behind such powerhouses as the Wild and Senators :sarcasm: , and only two spots above the Whalers. (Karmanos Sucks!)

2. Wow! That's a serious East Coast Bias there Upton with the top six teams...
and then there is a team from Dallas and another one from Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, and Anaheim way ahead of a team from San Jose.

:D

4. They're not ahead of them, they are behind
The point is they are spending too much money. It is better to be towards the bottom of that list. The Sharks have spent their money wisely. Trying to be the Yankees of the National Hockey League is not to be desired.

5. Not true
These are not payrolls, these are the financial worth of the franchise. How much money an investor should pay if they were to buy one. Nobody wants to be at the bottom of this list.

On the other hand, to a sports fan it shouldn't matter where your team is so long as they are competitive and solvent.

7. That's because the Cowboys have to factor in bail payments.

8. Tavares will become just as big a name as Jeter in New York
and the Islanders Franchise will skyrocket up that chart. The amount of revenue in endorsement deals and jersey sales this kid is poised to receive are insane.

Okposo is another with that Franchise who is going to be a star for Team USA and the Islanders for many years to come.

The Islanders are set to be one of the best teams in the NHL as well as the New York area in just a few years. I should probably bookmark this thread to rub in Upton's face when that happens. He really has no clue how insanely loyal and devout Islanders fans really are. Not to mention just how crazy Long Island goes for that team when they start winning.

I grew up during the Dynasty years and have yet to see anything like in any other area. And living in Boston with the Red Sox and Patriots winnings I can comfortably say that the fervor those teams have generated just does not compare.

10. As big as Jeter?
I doubt that. I also would be surprised if you are correct in your suggestion that the fans of NY are more enthusiastic than those of Boston.

Btw, I only highlighted the Islanders, Wings, Bruins and Sharks because those are the 4 teams that I know certain regular contributors to the sports forum are fans of...I wasn't trying to make some kind of point.

14. I wouldn't go that far.

Even Crosby isn't that popular. It's the NHL...it's popularity is only slightly higher that the PBA (no joke, the tv ratings are pretty much the same). No NHL player will be that popular. Even Gretzky in his heyday wasn't that popular compared to other athletes in other sports.

I'd say you're half right on the enthusiasm part though as compared to Boston, but there's a couple of reasons. One, on Long Island the Islanders is all there is unless you want to root for the big city teams (and from my experiences visiting the Island that's not an option for many), and two, they maintained they're run for 4 straight years. With the Sox and Patriots they're championships have been somewhat spread out. The Sox had three years between theirs, and it's tough to maintain that fervor in between. Had the Islanders spread their wins out that enthusiasm would have waned a bit.

I've watched a couple more of their games and they're fun to watch this year. That whole division is over .500 already, and I can't remember the last time I saw an entire division like that. And they're winning tight games, which was a problem at the start. I don't know how Nielson plays all the time, but in the games I've watched both he and Streit have played pretty good. If they don't make the playoffs they're going to wreak havoc with the teams that are trying to.

16. That was a great game last night!
I was glad they were playing the Bruins and that it was on NESN, because we don't get MSG+ on our regular satellite subscription service, so the number of Islanders games that I am able to watch on TV is usually limited.

Fortunately, I do get to go and see a few Bridgeport Soundtiger games a few times a year (Isle's AHL farm team).

17. Hockey is a regional sport
that tried (or is still trying) to go national. I grew up in Detroit, hockey is hard wired into me and most of the people in that area, as it is in the other original 6 team cities and all of Canada.
Hockey in Phoenix always seemed a bit of reach to me. Like the local may have gone once or twice but there in no real reason for them to embrace the game. It's not cold enough to force them to seek something to do when it's 10 degrees above zero.............
