Seahawks fire head coach Jim Mora; Pete Carroll to replace?
espn.com, 1-8-10

Seattle Seahawks coach Jim Mora has been fired, the first coach in team history to be let go after one season, and league sources say longtime USC coach Pete Carroll is being targeted as Mora's replacement.

Mora attended a meeting Friday morning with management, at which time he was told by Seahawks CEO Tod Leiweke that he did not win enough games to save his job. The Seahawks lost their final four games to finish 5-11.

Mora was shocked by his dismissal, believing that when he was called to Lieweke's office that he they would be in discussion about the team's vacant general manager's job, Seahawks sources said.

"We've made a tough decision today," Leiweke said in a statement. "It became apparent after conducting an extensive internal audit that a new direction was needed to provide an opportunity for the organization to be successful. Today's decision, while difficult, is part of the process in building a franchise with a new vision in 2010."

2. No offense to the OP at all, but this is just plain stupid
I hate the idea of firing a head coach after one season, it's the sign of a desperate ownership that has no idea what's going wrong, and there's no way Pete Carroll leaves USC now.

16. Desperate ownership....no idea what's going on
This is a sinking ship. They've been on the way down since that loss to the Steelers, and they haven't hit bottom yet. No GM, no coach, no quarterback and no clue.

3. I'd hate to see Carroll leave the Pac-10
and he's never proven he could be successful at the pro level. However, there's an NCAA investigation of the USC football program going on, and that, combined with Paul Allen's money, might be enough to pry him away.

4. I like Carroll, but he's no NFL coach.
He's too nice, basically, and the rah rah stuff won't work on people over the age of of 25, imo.

5. Hey Pete! Take the job before all the illegal and unethical stuff
catches up with you...I mean, eventually they'll actually admit to what Reggie Bush did.

6. Pete Carroll was a disaster in the NFL. Though I hear Urban Meyer is available.
It would be a two-fer for Seattle. Meyers & Tebow!

7. No..........
I live in Seattle. I am all for Pete Carroll coming here. He is very easy on the eyes. I would watch every presss conference and go to more games.

I would not be surprised if some of Meyer's histrionics had to do with a set up so he could go coach wherever the Messiah, I mean Tebow, goes. If they come to Seattle, though, I swear I'll picket the games.

13. In all fairness, his career record as an NFL head coach was 33–31.
6-10 with the Jets. And 27-21 with the Patriots, with one divisional title and no playoff victories.

His record worsened the longer he stayed with a team. So the first year might work out for Seattle, followed by... disaster.

14. How did Bill Belichick's first coaching job go?
The Seahawks rank last in sporting buzz up here in Seattle. This will get people talking, and who knows? Maybe Pete learned his lesson and will be a good coach.

15. Of course he goes to the NFL.
He lost his USC team, this year. Accomplished everything he needed to at USC. And since he has failed before in the Pro's, his ego says try it again. Sign, sealed and delivered. Good riddance from the college ranks, Pete. 'What's your deal'? 'What's YOUR deal?' Hilarious.
