Del Rio Staying in Jacksonville Amid U.S.C. Reports
http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2010/01/12/sports/AP-FBN-Jaguars-Del-Rio.html?_r=1&hpw

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- The Jacksonville Jaguars are sticking with coach Jack Del Rio, at least for another season.

Owner Wayne Weaver met with Del Rio on Tuesday, then said they would continue their rebuilding project with the Jaguars.

The announcement came amid speculation that Del Rio was a candidate to succeed Pete Carroll at Southern California. Carroll left USC to become the Seattle Seahawks coach.

Del Rio, a former All-American linebacker at USC, denied a report in the L.A. Daily News that he had been sent a contract Monday night. He said he never considered leaving Jacksonville.

Weaver scheduled a news conference for 3 p.m.

The Jaguars lost their final four games, faded from playoff contention and finished last in the AFC South for the second straight season. It was a significant setback for a small-market franchise known more for empty seats than postseason prowess.

1. He threatened to kill me when he was a freshman
I wrote an offbeat anti baseball column for the student newspaper, the Daily Trojan. Apparently Del Rio and a few other team members were not amused, and did not bother to read it carefully. I spent an entire paragraph criticizing resin bags.

I wasn't at the newspaper office when those baseball guys stormed up to the 4th floor to confront me. But the look on everyone's face when I arrived hours later told me it had to be true, and more than they were accustomed to.

I used to piss off every team a few times per year.

Anyway, lousy news. Del Rio's teams have a toughness to them, and they'll run the ball unmercifully down your throat if you can't stop it. I was hoping he'd take the job.
