Coach Turner inks 3-year extension with Chargers

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Like it or not, Chargers fans, coach Norv Turner will be sticking around for four more years.

The Chargers announced Monday night that the oft-maligned coach is getting a three-year contract extension through 2013.

The extension came just more than 24 hours after the Chargers were shocked 17-14 by the New York Jets in the divisional playoffs, renewing calls by some fans for Turner to be fired.

The team had been expected to extend Turner's contract in the offseason so he wouldn't be a lame duck next fall. That offseason came a lot sooner than most people expected. Some had picked the Chargers to win the Super Bowl, but they melted down in a hail of mistakes and penalties against the Jets.

Team president Dean Spanos told The Associated Press on Monday night that he spoke with Turner for about 45 minutes earlier in the day and got a deal done.

"I think he's done an outstanding job and I look forward to the next four years," Spanos said.

2. Four post-season losses now

One with the Redskins, three with the Chargers. Total record, 0 wins-4 losses

Overall won-loss record, 90-98.

Minus the Oakland experience it's 81-75

3. Not a good postseason coach,

but he does get them into the playoffs. All in all, people in Cleveland, Detroit, KC, and STL are still envious. I'd consider him a slightly above average coach for the regular season (when compared to ALL coaches), but well below those coaches who make regular playoff appearances. Unfortunately for him, his team is talented enough to do better, but his coaching ability is exposed in the playoffs against good competition. SD will continue to make it to, and then fail in, the playoffs as long as he's running the show.

4. He faced some really good teams

18-1 Patriots

The Super Bowl winning Steelers

The #1 defense, and #1 rush offense in the Jets. The Jets don't get a lot of credit but they have allowed the same YPA(5.4) as the Steelers did last year.

6. This is highly surprising and will piss off the fan base, but...

Norv did not lose the Jets game for them. Nate Kaeding and Phil Rivers are FAR more responsible.

Nor did he lose their home playoff game against the Patriots. (The stupid DB who got up with the game-ending INT and tried to run with it bears far more responsibility.)

9. it should be noted the each of the last two season, the 'bolts have exited the playoffs a game

sooner than the year before: 2-1, 1-1, 0-1
