Super Bowl breaks MASH's ratings records: CBS
"Super Bowl XLIV broke a 27-year-old all-time U.S. ratings record set by the comedy series MASH, CBS Corp. (CBS 12.83, -0.12, -0.93%) officials said Monday. The Sunday telecast, in which the New Orleans Saints defeated the Indianapolis Colts 31-17, drew 106.5 million viewers. The final episode of MASH, broadcast in 1983, captured 105.97 million viewers. Both shows were broadcast by CBS."

1. Really? That MASH record hasn't been close to being touched...
...but I bet the market share for MASH was greater.

3. Last year's Super Bowl drew 98.7 million viewers
Edited on Mon Feb-08-10 02:43 PM by JonLP24
which made it the second most watched US program in history behind MASH. I guess it's not that close since 7 million is a lot but it's up there.

2. It seems every year the past 3 Super Bowls sets a new Super Bowl viewers record

I recall Pats/Giants set a record, the Card-Pitt broke that record and now I see this one past the last 2. Interesting trend going on here.

4. I wonder if they're guess-timating group parties...not just
televisions turned on, but assuming about a dozen or so are watching at each set.

8. Of course it helps that the population continues to increase every day.
I wonder if they have all the tvs in nursing homes counted as if everyone is watching the game?

10. It probably helps
but there is no question interest is going up. Before the 2007-08 Super Bowl the 1999-2000 Super Bowl was the most watched. So it had years when it went up and years it went down but recently it's going up every year in a row for the last 3 years. That hasn't happened before even with the population increasing every year.

11. That is based on numbers only without comparing to population.
Now if they can provide the data in relation to population then it would have more validity.

The other side is that interest probably is increasing outside the USA.

12. I know that

The market share is 68 which I'm not sure what it means or how it compares to the last two Super Bowls or MASH.

I have no clue about interest outside of the US. I can only find US viewership numbers.

Ok market share for SB
SB 43-65
SB 42-65

6. I really hate these scumbags that misuse numbers.
233,791,994 -- 1983 estimated population
315,534,716 -- 2010 estimated population

45.33% MASH viewers
33.75% SB44 viewers

They would had needed 143,031,886 +1 viewers to beat the record for MASH.
Or 36,531,887 to beat the record.
