What Happened?

Watching the final round of the Masters Tournament, this past Sunday, a strange event occurred. On what I believe was the fifth or sixth hole, Mickelson had about a five foot putt for a birdie. After he putted, a golf tee fell on his line and the ball, striking the tee was diverted and he took a par on the hole. There was never an explanation, as to where that tee had come from, and I could find no mention of this occurrence since, in TV or newspapers reports. What happened?

...right in the line of the putt, after the shot had commenced...

but he putted again, no complaints made as far as I could tell.

on edit: are you sure it was a tee, I thought it was just some wind blown twig or something?

It was clearly shown on TV. It appeared to have come from the ground just to the right of the putting line. The announcer, at the time, surmised that this may have been the loss of the tournament.
