Jim Tressel recalls soft side of Hayes at area fundraiser
http://www.daytondailynews.com/dayton-sports/ohio-state-buckeyes/tressel-recalls-soft-side-of-hayes-at-area-fundraiser-687246.html

FAIRBORN — Jim Tressel had a personal story to share about Woody Hayes.

As he sat on a stool under a spotlight on Tuesday, May 4, Tressel began talking about his father. Lee Tressel was a football coach at Baldwin-Wallace College, and after winning a Division III national championship in 1978, he was diagnosed with cancer and deteriorated.

In 1981, Hayes, the famed Ohio State football coach, was speaking at a luncheon in Detroit when a former Baldwin-Wallace player introduced himself and mentioned Lee Tressel wasn’t doing well.

“He said to this person he had just met, ‘Did you drive here? Let’s drive to Cleveland and see Coach Tressel,’ ” Jim Tressel said.

Tressel, the current Ohio State coach, was on a Nutter Center stage with former OSU coach John Cooper as part of An Evening with Ohio State Coaches fundraising dinner. In 70 minutes before a crowd of about 700, they discussed issues ranging from their decisions to take the job, their favorite players, college rules and the Miami Valley’s importance to Ohio State

But Tressel’s story about Hayes most quieted the room.

He continued, saying Hayes arrived at the hospital at a time when his mother was running errands and his father was having difficulty responding.

“So my mom comes back into the room, and my dad hadn’t talked in a few days,” Tressel said. “My mom walked in, and my dad looked up and said, ‘Coach Hayes was here.’ That was the impact he had.”

13. Woody Hayes spoke at a testimonial for Bo Schembechler
just a day or two before he died, even though he had to drag himself there to do it.

14. And I'll tell you another thing
If Bo and Woody were still around, this jackass Delaney wouldn't get very far trying to dilute the Big Ten.
