Facebook is going nuts over Jim Joyce
Jim Joyce the umpire whose gigantic error robbed the Detroit's pitcher of a perfect game is getting absolutely pounded on FaceBook.

There are already over 500 anti Jim Joyce groups made on FaceBook in the past few hours. :wow:

There are even groups on FaceBook calling for his assassination...

2. while such things are ridiculous
even for IMPORTANT issues (re: calling for assassination)

He was goddamned out. However again, here was his response (from ESPN):

"It was the biggest call of my career, and I kicked the out of it," Joyce said, looking and sounding distraught as he paced in the umpires' locker room. "I just cost that kid a perfect game."

"I thought he beat the throw. I was convinced he beat the throw, until I saw the replay," he said after the Tigers' 3-0 win."

For a ref in ANY sport to say that gives a lot of credit to him. I can't join the hate.

4. In my opinion he should resign and lay low for a while
I kid you not there are some groups calling for him to be beheaded. I have never seen anything quite like this.

If I were Selig I would award the kid the perfect game. That would save the umpire's life.

5. The response from the public is way worse than the call.
Sigh for humanity.

first of all, I'm sure most of it is hyperbole. There are always crazy people, but most of it isn't serious

second, though, Detroit fans are... well, I can't speak for the Tigers but I've known some psychotic Red Wings fans

21. Yeah. Really. People are passionate about this stuff.
Nobody's gonna lynch the ump. They're just pissed. And they have a right to be.

Galarraga and Leyland.

I did have to bail on Finnegan's Wake, though.

Actually I never even tried Ulysses, but I should have said Finnegan. That's the one he made deliberately unreadable.

27. yes Virginia,
but there is not a famous book called "What's the matter with Virginia?" is there?

Hence, your question "What's the matter with you?"

followed by "I'm from Kansas"

is not a non sequitur, but rather a joke that you didn't get.

And you claim to have understood Ulysses??? :P

it was almost a perfect game - if he did maybe he would have called it differently? He's apologized.

17. There Have Been Only 20 Perfect Games Pitched In The History Of Baseball.
18 up until this year. On the scale of personal achievement, it's a pretty big deal. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. The Queen of Hearts would be proud of you.

and the announcers were giving updates on the Roy Halladay game. I was more interested in the updates than the actual game I was listening to.

19. Oh yeah. They really do.
Baseball is such a part of American history and culture. A perfect game is an incredible accomplishment. There have only been 20 in the history of the game. This would have been the 21st. If you read about baseball's history, you'll see it ties in closely with events of the time. Plus, it's a great diversion from all the heavy stuff. Sometimes I just have to give my heart a break.

22. Meet the new Don Denkinger
On the bright side, Galarraga will probably get more notoriety after having Joyce steal his perfect game. Joyce should just resign now, as he will go down with ignominy with the likes of Denkinger and Bill Buckner.

All I hear is how good these umpires are. However, so-called respected umpires like Country Joe West, Tim McClelland, Gerry Davis, and now Joyce have made some egregious errors in the last year.

At least Selig will have no choice but to expand instant replay.

23. What is wrong with FB?
Joyce clearly screwed up, and added insult to injury by arguing with Cabrera at 1B. Still, the people who make threats on Facebook are 1000 times worse than the umpire in this case.

30. They should leave Joyce alone and focus their attention on the commissioner.
It is his refusal to allow replays for this type of situation.
